so for personal defense?
the best personal defense weapon is the one that you are most proficient with.
Go tryout some

Are you wanting 1 pistol for both of you to share, or 2 pistols one for each of you ? Go to your local indoor range and they will likely rent pistols that you can shoot and "test drive". Options include revolver vs. semi-auto, small size for conceal carry vs. larger size pistol for home defense, and caliber: .38 spcl, .357, .380, 9mm, 40 S&W, 45ACP, etc.... Choose the pistol that you feel most comfortable with. Consider it an investment in life insurance. You get what you pay for and don't buy a Raven, Lorcin, or Jennings.

Probably a Turkish brand of some sort, SAR (Sarsmilaz) or Girsan.
Get a fullsize in 9 (be sure to find ammo too). 40 might be easier to find on the shelf, not sure... but more recoil might limit the wife.
Kill, not injure; get good SD (hollowpoint rounds) to keep it loaded, and learn accuracy. Nothing is going to be a Phaser set to kill, you have to hit something vital.
Inexpensive= why I mentioned the Turks. You're looking at a couple hundred less than more popular brands, which is money you can spend on range ammo. They have a good reputation for function, and most are close to being clones of "known brands". Some are 'almost' CZ's, some are near Walthers or Glocks. Some are almost Berettas.
If you look at forums dedicated to those brands/styles, they usually are complimentary of the Turk guns. I know the CZ fans like them.
edit regarding ammo- when I say SD rounds to keep loaded, I mean "you want to have good hollowpoints" loaded in the magazine for when you might need it. And you DO want to shoot a magazine or so of that at the range, at least, in order to be comfortable with it feeding; hollowpoints aren't as smooth as FMJ rds, you do want to be certain it won't jam up the gun.
But after that, you do want cheaper, FMJ range ammo. You will get a lot better shooting, if you shoot more. Cheap ammo costs maybe half what good self defense ammo does, and at self-defense ranges (say inside 15 yds) the point of impact is close enough to be equal. So maybe 500 rds to a case of range stuff, maybe 3-4 boxes of self-defense loads. Shoot enough of the self-defense to be sure it works in the gun, then switch to the range ammo, and save the hollowpoints for when it's needed.

Pistol - A lot of good options out there. You want Semi-auto or revolver?
Me and the wife can both handle easily - Probably looking a 9mm or a .357 if you're going revolver (you can shoot.38 out of the .357 but not vice-versa) easier round to shoot and cost effective.
Want kill not injure - They all are very lethal if you make a good selection for ammo. 9mm with the right ammo is very lethal and has good stopping power.
Inexpensive - My recommendation is don't skimp; this is literally something that you relying on for your life. But you still can get a very good pistol for a good price. Something like a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 is a very solid pistol that you can have in hand for under $500.
The Glock 19 is the go to for reliability. You can't go wrong there. The Glock45 is interesting as well. Slide length of a 19 and grip length and capacity of the 17. I love my G45.

Op, call a police supply and ask about used Glocks. G17 or G19. I’m taking the 19 all day every day

But then, the gal shoots it, and impressions change a lot
That's why I said fullsize 9, and avoid 40. And if you're worried about 40, then 357 is even more of an issue.
quote:Excellent point, but like I said, the Turkish brands. You look at Sarsmilaz, Girsan and Canik (another Turk), and generally you get very good feedback. The CZ fans really like the Canik and SAR's. I've heard plenty of good about the one that looks like a Walther. Same for the Girsan 92 lookalike, if you can find one. They are well made and solid, just not as entrenched in the market, and they tend to be 150-200 less than the "real thing".

do not buy a weapon for your wife to use without her putting it in her hand.
I say that because my wife hates semi "Auto pistols as she has trouble racking a shell in it.
I have her few revolvers and she loves them.
.38 is lower recoil and its a similar round to the 9mm.
You can get on them pretty cheap and the simplicity to use and maintain are great for beginners.

I recently handled the Taurus G3 and was quite impressed with it especially considering the price.
I'm generally a Glock buyer when it comes to the polymer pistols, but at budget prices I think the G3 and G2C are great guns.

What GotBlaze said:
Full size 9mm would be my choice if you're not going to conceal carry, and you can find one.

Handgun- the answer is almost always 9mm.
Cost of the gun is inconsequential when reliability is the main concern so I recommend glock and Springfield as reliable, everyday brands.
When it comes to cost, 9mm bullets are the most reasonable and that’s where you’ll spend most of your money.

Assuming you want one pistol for home defense. Go to a range and shoot with your wife if that is an option. If not, go to a store and make sure you find something that feels good to both of you and that you can both rack without too much trouble. Ideally that will be a Glock 17.

The OB disappoints me today. So many poor responses.
OP, we’re gonna need pics of wife to make good educated suggestions for you.
