Aren't they invasive and take over wood duck boxes?

They are cavity nesters. They will use boxes.

Correct. Once folks realize they eat good, they won't be an invasive problem for long

no idea on taste

They are very good to eat. Over here in TX, they will search out deer feeders on deer leases near the coast. No telling how many game cam pics I have seen with tree ducks standing around a feeder.

I've killed them in El Campo, TX in the 90's. And we killed 7 opening day last year in NELA.

They have been nesting on the Red River the last few years as well around NWLA. I see them fishing during the spring/summer a lot.

The eat just fine.

Yep, they are all over here. Showed up about 10 years ago. I could go kill 100 out of my truck this afternoon if I was so inclined. Every puddle or rice field around here has some on it.

Must be on the golf courses when the season opens cause I have made a hunt or 2 up there in the last 10 years and we have never shot any. I guess they are like the ones down here in TX and shag arse to a warmer climate once the season opens.

That's right. We don't see a whole lot during duck season. May shoot a a couple early on. Spring time they show back up.

Are they legal to shoot out of duck season?

I heard they were but haven't found an answer one way or the other.

Not that I duck hunt a lot, but I don't believe I've ever seen one while hunting. But in a neighborhood pond, they are thick as shite. I could easily limit out with a slingshot at my parents house at certain times of the year.

Neighbor feeds them regularly and in the evenings he'll have over 20+ in his front yard. I try to hit them with a baseball when they fly over. Im wayyyy off though

I think I can actually relate to his post outside of it sounding like he wants to outlaw on some tree ducks. I think his post was if they are non-natives, then there is no season on them. You are right at least from the Greenjeans we have been checked by here. Limit is 6, only during big duck season.

They are invasive in the sense that they are expanding their range (i.e. natural invaders). They aren't an invasive that was released by man, whether intentionally or unintentionally, like many other detrimental animals and plants.

Edit: Inca Doves, White-winged Doves, and Cattle Egrets have all invaded naturally, to my knowledge. The two dove species are exhibiting the same sort of eastern expansion as Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are showing.
