Black Bellied Whistling Ducks

Pretty sure they'd be good in a gumbo.

It appears that they are really expanding, I am seeing them everywhere around the house now.

Starting to see a lot of this year round. The population must be doing well. Never tried eating one.

it looks like one of these has a tag of some kind.

We shoot them down in Kaplan if they come over. Taste good to me. Problem is flock after flock after flock with flyover right before shooting time. Then you won't see anymore the rest of the day

We shoot them in Winnie, TX too. They are dumb as a box of rocks. You can light a flock up and then whistle at them and they will come right back for some more. The problem is they generally leave real early in the season, usually after the first decent cold front. We are lucky if there are any left when first split opens.

Aren't they invasive and take over wood duck boxes?

I don't think these are cavity nesters. Not these in the pics anyway. Not sure about the other tree duck though (I think those are called Fulvous Tree Ducks). About the only other duck that I have seen take over a Woodrow box is a Hooded Merganser.

Then frickers eat rice. We used to each take a corner of a rice field and shoot am till the left during the early summer months.....not sure if green jeans cares.

btw, we wouldn't eat then, so I gave no idea on taste. But they days rice and such. I would imagine it tastes like duck
