I tent camp on average 6-12 times per year, depending on year. Most commonly it’s just me and one kid, and I have been considering a pickup bed tent. In addition to camping-camping, we often go to rocket launches and my kids think this would be awesome.

My challenge, though, is the truck bed is usually quite full with a cooler, fishing poles, etc…

I say it’s better to just pitch a tent (of which we have several already) on the ground. But this weekend at the rocket launches, we saw so many truck bed tents, it made me curious. How practical are they?

Imagine towing an enclosed trailer not too big that holds all your gear and is extra safe place dry storage when camping too.

I have a hard top camper shell. When we get to camping area unload cooler and chairs and inflate the air mattress. This also gives me a light and fans and phone chargers. Slept in bed in temps as low as 30s.

IDK about truck tents. It would suck to "break camp" every time to drvie the truck from the camp site.

everything you normally put in the bed, has to go on the floor walk space in the camper, so your reduced to the space of a tool box for your stuff, then the roof rack can be used

No desire for a trailer for camping. I can go wherever I want and we hike in quite often. A trailer would have been a disaster this weekend with the Artemis launch crowds. Kids saw several truck bed and rooftop tents, it’s something they are interested in.

I had one for my tundra. Loved it. Got an inflatable mattress for it too. Super easy to set up and tear down. Perfect for 2 people. It started a love of camping for me and the wife and we have upgraded to a 27’ trailer which we are using to see the country.

As far a what I did with my stuff while sleeping, I put what needed to stay dry in the inside of the truck. Easy.

I think the vehicle top things are just trendy right now. I have no problem sleeping on a ground level tent. Air mattress is perfect, but a good sleeping pad is just fine.

And expensive.

But my problem is that my Rottweiler acted like he was bitten by something in the paw at about 10 or 11 pm.

We looked and couldn’t find anything.

If I did have to take him or forbid; a kid to the ER, I’d have to break it down out of the bed.

No night rides in the trails either.

And lots of people seem to just keep them on all the time, along with their pristine never used recovery boards. It’s like decorations

I agree. I offered to bring an air mattress and rig up a tarp if they want to try sleeping in truck as a one-off. I prefer tent with a cot these days…

Overlarping

We have a 4Runner so I'm on a bunch of 4Runner groups/pages, the amount of crap some of those dudes are dragging around daily and never using is ridiculous.

OP, I have a camper shell that' I've slept in a few times using one of those truck bed air mattresses. We don't usually have much stuff, so moving it to the cab, or storing under the truck is no big deal.

This all depends on the "camping" you're doing.

Roof top tents and camping trailers with roof top tents on them are the way to sleep in/around a vehicle. I don't see sleeping in the bed or in the back of an SUV as superior to a tent. Gear can stay in vehicle, no hassle. Tent goes to the ground, only hassle is pitching tent.

OP, check out Last Line Of Defense on YouTube.

He primarily does gear and tech reviews in the outdoor/offroading/camping space.

Most of his vids feature various types of iKamper tents. Might have some good info for you there.

Not what you're looking for but here's my setup.

Torklift front hitch and a basket has become my space savior. Going from a trailer to a truck camper you lose storage but I can't haul my boat or waverunner with a trailer behind me already.

The freezer in the basket is full of fish. Handles awesome on rough road too.

These are from a few years back and I have since modified it but this is what I’ve done.

I’m looking to build this for the old 77.

That is an impressive setup although I could never be relaxed for long rides with all the different things that could go wrong or be inconvenient (flat tires, narrow turns, launching boat without being able to see, etc).

I’m the kind of dude that wouldn’t want the hassle of dealing with all that stuff but would be jealous of all the options you had for a good time once you got there.
