So back some time now my truck was broken into and someone stole my .45, a Springfield XD. I really liked that gun, but always had a little buyers remorse for not getting a 1911. I've finally decided to go ahead and get a replacement, but this time won't make that same mistake and will get a 1911 this time.

I have been looking into the Ruger SR1911 series. I'm a big fan of Ruger. Also, I wouldn't have a problem going with Springfield. I'd like to stay with an $800 budget, and plan to get a full size 5" barrel model.

Any particular guns you guys would recommend, any other makers I should check out while looking?

SR1911 Night Watchman should be right at $800 or barely over. Looks slick is hell.

I bought the SR 1911 a couple years ago and love it. Shot it in a side by side comparison to my friend's Kimber and I preferred the trigger on the Ruger fwiw.

I think the SR1911 is the best value American 1911 on the market. Everything is smooth and the trigger is quite good.

Here's my review if you have over 20 minutes (Commander sized but same mechanics):

I'm a big fan of springfield myself. Cabelas has the springfield mil-spec for $799.

I use to want the ruger SR1911, but a buddy of mine who use to work for a local gun shop was told me that the though the ruger sr1911 isn't a bad choice at all, it feels a bit loose, and to go ahead and spend just a little bit more on a springfield, that it just feels more tight and crisp like a 1911 should.

So now I'm currently saving for a springfield 1911 range officer champion.

I do as well (see avatar) and love my gun. But I think the Ruger brings more to the table for less money. Still, the Smith is slick and quite good looking. One has more of a classic look and the other a modern look.

The gator picture you have may send him over the edge for the Ruger!

thanks for all the recs fellas. I pretty much had my mind made up that I want the SR1911, sounds like it is a good choice.

any of you have experience with both the 5" and the 4.25" and have preferences either way?

The 4.25" will have slightly better balance since it has less weight at the muzzle. But then again, it has more felt recoil since it weighs less. There's a tradeoff for everything.

If it's your first 1911, I would lean towards a 5". It's just the classic style and is supposed to be the most reliable since it was the original design.

Go Springfield. You will not regret it. I think that this is still my favorite gun.

You can get a ruger and be happy with it. It's not a Springfield. It may can compete with the lower end models cuz it's got more bling but not the TRPs and such.

I have a Springfield Champion commander.

The trigger sucks. So much so I will have to replace it.
