both near christmas both set records..
83 went fishing in canals off lake judge perez - hit waves going into lake water froze on our faces....well known chef in boat with us started screaming turn this FING boat around...trip over...
hit some deep ponds on way home killed a few ducks.. caught 3 nice reds at myrtle grove canal - quit cuz hands too cold... back then.. there was no launch - no nothing... just a gate...
89.. hunted east zone.. airboat ride day front cam e in got our 6 ducks and bolted... as I was crossing the lousy lump snow/sleet started got off interstate at louisa back streets rest of way... could see pileup occuring on lump in rearview..
hunted welsh two days later.... 8 degrees.. many many ducks and many many geese....
freeze of 83 killed at least 6 duck hunters in la....came in much faster/colder than expected.. winds were much stronger than expected pushing water out of marsh....
knew one of the guys that died.. saw two of them gassing up that morning in metairie before i went to westbank..
anyone else scoop up specks in either freeze? i did in 83 not 89 but one of my friends/aquaintences did get a ticket for over the limit on trout - during 89 freeze.. at bayou bienvenue

Freeze of 89...I went goose hunting with 4 friends around Hayes, La. We had a GREAT hunt. We were shooting blues, snows and specks. But one we had our speck limit, we shut it down. Back to the camp for coffee, biscuits, grits and venison sausage. It was cold!

Was just talking about this a few weekends ago at the camp. 3 of the older guys there were talking about their adventures that day. Left to go hunting/fishing after a night out. Talked about how fast the weather changed and how they almost died. Between getting wet, not clothed properly, and breaking down, they had a rough time. They made it to a small crew boat where they were taen care of and then sent on their way. After they left is when it just got worse for them and ended up at a camp where they saw smoke coming out of the chimney. There is where they really rested up and realized one of them had hypothermia. Was a great story to listen to as all three had that look of "glad we made it" on their faces as they told it.

Went to high school and was fraternity brothers with my best friend. He also had been dating my first cousin for 2 years. I was with her when we got the final news on Christmas Eve.
I hadn't been to visit his grave since the funeral until this year. Went on Christmas Eve, it really helped with my mood.

That's really sad. I was only 15 in 1989, so I don't really remember this event. Why did so many people get caught off guard? Was it not forecast, was the forecast wrong, or did people just not pay attention?

Really stong north winds combined with a falling tide basically pushed all the water out of the marsh.

83 front came in faster and colder than predicted - also - winds were much more ferocious...
was discussing this last weekend... I remember seeing a bank in algiers saying temp was like 22 went to grand parents to meet uncle and other folks ate breakfast had coffee loaded boat up... passed bank 40 minutes later it was 17 winds were HOWLING...
was not supposed to get quite that cold that day - it was NEXT day supposed to be super cold...
wind blew water out of marsh FAST which is what got people stuck... Nobody had go devils then.. one guy near houma that died was in a mud boat stuck...
glassman.. I never heard anyone say an ill word about any of those three whilst they were live....

I remember the '89 blast. Duck hunting was prime and we made a day out of mopping up on the redfish down in Pecan Island. We had a flat bottom aluminum boat that we used the middle section between the bench seats as a livewell (filled it with about 6 inches of water). That water froze on top with fish underneath during the ride into the landing.
Damn I miss the days back on "the island".

Very true. The guy my friend was hunting with survived. My friend saved him by lying down on the bottom of the pirogue and wrapping him up with his jacket. He was frozen to the bottom of the pirogue.

In 83 I was 6 years old. Bussey Brake froze over solid. Mom took us out the cause she heard people were playing on the ice. We got there and sure enough people were scattered around out from the boat dock skating (roller) around and whatnot. She would only let us get out a little ways from the bank. Then we heard this loud arse noise and see some Jed round the bend on a Big Red 3 wheeler skint back. After that it was on. We walked all around Bussey that day on the ice. There were countless people riding 3 wheelers out there and even 1 VW Bug. Good times.

83 - don't remember.
89 - Not certain, but I think this is when I went with a friend to Catahoula toward the end of the event. The lake at Stock Landing was frozen except for a circle out in the middle. It was warm that day and there were heavy SW warm winds.
We walked out to where the hole was, and there were eleventy billion ducks. We shot some, then the ice started moving in huge blocks. The old blind we jumped in got destroyed by it. We had to make a run for it with ice sheets beating up against our shins with every step through it. 'twas scary.
96 - went to Cleco. The high that day was 26 or 23-can't remember. Was catching bass on a South Carolina rig in tops in the hot water. Had to leave due to poor feets planning. Thought my toes were going to fall off. It was a dip the rod in the water type day.

one of the guys I hunted with(who was about 15 years older than me at the time) started filing a "float plan" with his wife after that day... about a week later going into hunting his lease off alligator point in chef pass - we hit a submerged gill net in lake borgne - swamp boat we were stranded.. used cb radio to get a truck driver to call his wife and tell her what happened she had a marked map at home.. called CG... chopper flew over about 20 minutes later - boat got there about 40 minutes later.... took us, dogs and boat back to barneys... no bill - at least not that i ever knew of..
