bad thing in 83 and 89 was that it was ridiculously warm RIGHT before fronts....

exactly, we had a pretty good blast last week that drained marsh. Its funny how I can remember that temp drop like it was yesterday. I had a girl I was dating hunting with us, she was about to light whatever she could in boat to warm up.

I remember the first ducks I saw trying to land outside of decoys on the ice (yes, they did it back in the good ole days) and go from looking so graceful to so spastic in seconds.

his two little brothers came back to the house with 3 mallards and and a gadwall. They were like 6 and 8 years old, and had left the house to hunt robins with Benjamin pumps.

I asked them how in the world they killed those (I thought they were someone's pets until I say the grey duck), and they said "man, the hotwater ditch is fulluh ducks, yeah".

Leave it to little kids sometimes to point out the unobserved obvious!!!

Has anyone seen that video of the eagles busting pouldeau in the little patch of water left open?

The pouldeau kept a little hole open in a big freeze but it wasnt big enough for them to take off and the eagles thumped them. I will look for a link, but if someone has it please post it.

I have 5 in 89, so I don't remember it, but there are some pictures of my family playing on a frozen lake somewhere around central LA

I remember the ice storm in 97 (?). We pulled the kneeboard behind the 4 wheeler all over the place. T'was a good time.

Pretty sure it was 96. Mung lived in a newer neighborhood with undergound utilities. He was about the only person I knew with power. Lots of us over there hanging and passing out.

I was in the hood. Albert St. I had a fireplace in the front, and a wall heater in the back. The temp change inside the house from one room to the next was so severe, I thought a thunderstorm might form.

Was working that christmas break with a fairly well known ESJ wildcat....

we hit that SAME SPOT...

Man, wasn't that incredible? Nothing like walking behind your house (or in my case my friends house), scaring up about 300 mallard ducks, just hiding in the weeds, and waiting for them to trick back in.

I was 5 in '83, so didn't do any hunting. I remember the ground being frozen over though. We rode around in a shopping cart body pulled by a 3 wheeler. My grandparents built such a fire in their fireplace that it melted the candles on the mantle.

In '89 the lake we hunted froze solid. We used iron bars to break the ice enough to get it floating and pointed in the right direction. Then we'd run the boat up on top of the ice and rock it back and forth til it fell through. In hindsight, it was a pretty dumb thing to do. But if you could keep a hole open in the ice, ducks would fall into it. We stood straight up with guns in hand. They didn't care. When we knocked them down they would hit the ice and skid for several yards. It was an unforgettable experience to say the least.

That shite won't happen in a rice field. I hate marsh hunting. This only furthers my views on it.

I see your point but we carry 2 heaters and spare clothes when it is real cold. I only missed limitting out one time this year in the marsh and that was with 6 people. It is like crack. I just cant give it up.

My pond (about 2 acre) froze over, except this 3 ft. diameter circle in the middle where two ducks kept paddling. I could walk across the pond though, pushed my boat across it without any trouble.

My water lines froze, and they thawed on Christmas day. I had leaks springing up all through the house, that was one crappy christmas.
