Headed to Perdido next weekend for New Years and I d love to pack the fly rod and try to catch something in the surf. Is this possible this time of year? If so, what kinda fish would I be targeting and what are they gonna eat?

Many times. It feeds into the White. Biggest trout I’ve ever caught was in the Norfork. 6ish lbs cutthroat on a size 24 midge.

Pencecola Bonefish

If you have a boat the False Albacore will start showing up on the beach. You might get lucky and find a few in the surf. Redfish will in the surf too. Try Johnson beach, there is a boat ramp with pretty good fishing if you have a kayak or skiff. Or drive to the end of the road and get as far away from people as you can, you will have access to big lagoon and the surf. It's about 4 miles from the end of the road to the end of the beach but it's a pretty easy walk.

Man I’m there to get drunk and hang out at the Flora Bama so I’m not trying to make an adventure out of this. Just seeing if it’s possible to catch anything in the surf from the beach.

Polar, the best day we had on the Norfork was floating in a kayak, then stopping to fish spots without public access from the bank. Watch the generation and when the horn blows, get out immediately. No one more cast. If you have kids, take them to Dry Run Creek. Amazing.

Has anyone fished an Orvis Hydros SL yet?

Im looking at buying a new 8wt reel and am in between current model Hydros SL, previous Orvis Mirage (ebay), or Nautilus XL.

It's a great reel for the money. I see them all over the place and people seem to like them. Redfish are not very hard on 8wt fly reels anyway so don't think too much into it, buy what you like but keep in mind the Hydros is made in China.

Fixing to move back to Louisiana so im looking to put together something to fish reds with. Looking at purchasing an Allen Kraken (7wt-9wt).

Can I get some rod, backing (lbs), and line suggestions that won’t break the bank. Fishing would be reds and bass in sela marsh.

I’ve had a Kraken, it’s a good real.
For rod I’d look at TFO BVK 8wt. On an 8wt you’d be fine with 20lb dacron backing. Allen should spool it up for you. I use Royal Wulff Bermuda Triangle Taper line. I normally tie 9’ sections of 15lb fluoro for my leader if i’m fishing slots.

Back on Norfork, bbvdd and WBY, it looks like it will be late May before I can make it up there. I just wanted to check the productivity/activity level for that time of year....

I have been slowly upgrading/gearing up. Ended up getting a 5wt Echo Base rod, Fishpond double haul pack (score for $50!), SA Frequency Boost Line, TFO rod/reel case.

I say this every time but ebay is a fantastic resource for used or pre owned fly rods and reels. A ton of people buy and sell fly equipment all the time and they might only use it a handful of times, if any.

line suggestions

Search amazon or ebay for previous yr model Scientific Angler line. A weight forward floating line with a short head (30ft) will work. Most of the time its the same as the current offering but just different color.

I'll check it out, but I'm not real big on used stuff. I'm sure it's all good, but I just can't get over the fact that it was being cared for by someone else at one point.

I understand being hesitant, but keep in mind you're not buying a second hand uglystick. Fly equipment is expensive and most people baby their rods and reels due to price tag.

Thankfully fly fishin aint neva been expensive for me. I got a 9 ft medium action fiberglass eagle Claw rod back in Jr high school the rod came with a life time guarantee. I fished it hard but early in my college years it got broke. I sent it to Eagle claw with a note please repair or replace and bill accordingly. I got back a fancy new graphite rod no carge it replaced my ole rod. This lasted till I was in my 30's and it got broke same story. I still have the rod they gave me in replacement and sue it mostly for fishing Sac au lait or perch. I was given a LL bean fancy rod for my 50th birthday and its my bass rod now. oh and I just turned 60 a few days ago.
