If she's going to carry, she needs to have it on her, not in a bag. The first thing someone is going to do if trying to attack a woman is to separate her from her purse/bag;beacuse they know that more often than not, that's where the cell phone, gun, taser, pepper spray is going to be.
Excellent Point

I have the XDM9 3.8 now, and she can rack the slide on that.
That's good for that gun, but unfortuantely, it doesn't mean she can rack the slide on all subcompacts. Frequently, the shorter the frame on the semi-auto, the more difficult it is to rack the slide.

Chief,
Downshift made some very good points I agree w/. A problem w/ purse carrying a semi-auto is the potential for the action to catch on the purse, or it's MANY contents, making a followup shot impossible.
ETA: Lots of good info on this site that is specific to women, self defense and concealed carry.
LINK
Also some good videos by women, for women, on Youtube. Look for the name of "Falia photography" (?sp) and "Limatunes."
One big problem for women is where to carry. From what I've observed, most would rather not carry on the body so end up carrying off the body in the purse, baby bag, day planner, etc. There are obvious security problems w/ off body carry.

Alright my personal opinion is a hammerless .38spl is the ultimate Carry gun for a woman. Nothing to do except pull the trigger and nothing to snag on that mountain of shite they keep in their purse. No jams to clear or any of that either. They can just focus on drawing and shooting, and shoot through the purse if they have to

Whoa, Crawdaddy. I did not say women are weak. I also did not say "the slides take a lot of muscle." Nevertheless, it does require a degree of hand/finger strength to properly and reliably grasp and rack the slide on a semiauto. It's a fact of life that this gets more difficult as the gun gets smaller: there's less surface area on the slide to grasp; resistance to compress the recoil springs increases as the springs get shorter. I've shot w/ a lot of women. A number of them have had these problems. The problems can sometimes be overcome w/ additional training, but I've also seen situations where a women was instantly turned off on the idea of using a semiauto due to problems operating it. If you've not seen any of this, you've just not shot w/ enough women yet.
You don't have to believe me if you don't want to, but maybe you'll believe a gun expert, like Massad Ayoob.
"Now, let’s look at techniques. The average woman’s fingers will be shorter by about a digit’s length than the average man’s. She will have less upper body mass and strength than her brother."

Not saying you did. It just seems to be the overall feel of the OB. Women can't slide a semi auto, buy a Judge.

I have always wanted an EMP
I would be worried that the little lady would get it stolen though. It is $1k

I'd like to do something like this some day, real sharp IMO, probably not a good CC weapon however.

I went the cheaper route and purchased a High Point 9mm sub for my wife. It’s a little heavy- (for a sub) and won’t win any beauty contest but it gets the job done. I ordered from Buds for $150 with a case.
Now that right there's funny -- I don't care who you are. [/cable guy]

The ratio of semi lovers to revolver lovers on this site is very lopsided
Posted on 4/5/12 at 9:49 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
What's the ratio?
