I’ve never gotten a tint of sun through a white t shirt. That’s why it’s called a farmer’s tan.

Are you dense? It's not complicated. Google can help you.

You didn't get burned, but you still got some sun through it. May be negligible, but they're not "SPF Infinity".

I wear whatever I find on sale or receive as gifts. I have some guy Harvey hooded shirts from Walmart, some no name brand shirts from Amazon, and a handful of Columbias. I’ve definitely turned into a long pants and long shirt guy when fishing over the past few years.

Stats are scary, I shave my head so most worried about long term impacts….don't really like wearing hats but always try on the water (or a bandana). Luckily got some Honduran genes in me so I brown up…couldn’t imagine being fair skinned or a ginger and like to boat/fish as much as I do.

I've had basal cell and a melanoma cut out. I grew up on the gulf coast, worked on the beach, played sports 10 months out of the year, blonde hair/ blue/green eyes. Being a pilot and exposed to thinner atmosphere also compounds my issues.

I dig the AFTCO hoody style. Really cool in hot weather, protects better than a gator.

Ordinary cotton shirts have a UPF rating of about 5.

Another vote for Aftco.

Same here. And you can find them on sale at Bass Pro all the time. I have two hoodies I bought off a clearance rack at the one in Denham. Both are great. I prefer hoodies when I’m on the kayak.

I like breathable ones to wear for fishing. The Columbia/Magellan PFG style are a little bulky for lack of a better word? Under Armour has some but they aren’t comfortable until you start sweating. Pelagic is great but again, got to get them on sale. A cheap Amazon brand is Koofin. I’ve got a white one that’s got various stains from inshore and offshore fish that has held up very well for a $15 shirt.

Aint no way that's accurate.

Am I to believe that shirtless with sunscreen blocks more sun than a regular long sleeve T shirt?

Aint no way.

For a brief period of time, if you have complete coverage, yes. But sunscreen doesn't last on your skin for very long, while obviously a shirt doesn't change unless you get it wet.

Pelagic aquatek is damn good fishing shirt for the price. Extremely breathable, vented, stain repellent, dry fast, 50 upf, comfortable, and fit great. You can normally find the hooded ones one sale for $40-$50.

I found some Bimini Bay long sleeve dry fit with a hood and built in, breathable face mask at Walmart last year for $24. Never use the face mask, but I pressure wash all day and have no complaints.

MOHS

That sucks. I have had that done a couple of times. It takes a while to heal. Sometimes they will do a skin graft to cover what they removed. I didn’t have a graft on either one but it left an area about the size of a silver dollar. Hopefully they can get enough margins by the second time. I never had to go back a third time.

The Huk waypoint hoodie is my favorite. It's what feels best against my skin on hot arse days offshore. It's 33% rayon, so it "feels" like a really light, soft cotton. The 100% polyester shirts dry a lot better if they get soaked, but they just feel sticky and like they trap heat to me.

The waypoint can also be found online for like 30-40 bucks. I've got 3 or 4 of them, but one has become my "lucky" shirt, and it's got the Tuna and Snapper blood stained on it to prove it

MOHS on a small spot between top of my nose and right eye.
Not a lot of skin there to begin with.

First cut at 8:30 no clear margins so he cut and tested over and over
Made his last cut at 2:30. Cut #7 !!!!

First cut made hole smaller than a dime.
Last cut made hole the size of a nickel.

Told me they were going to have to deaden a large area and cut vertically so he could pull skin down to close.
6 syringes and 24 injections
No idea how many internal stitches. 17 stitches on outside.

Got off table at 3:30. My nerves were shot and bad black eye almost swollen shut before I left.

Doc told me he has only had 4 patients go over 5 cuts and I am one of 4
I asked him what was the highest number of cuts. Two patients had 9 cuts.

Put on the sunscreen every morning !!!
Long sleeve shirts and big hat when doing yard work or fishing.

MOHS is NO FUN !!!!!

Sorry to hear that. I have a genetic condition that predisposes me to cancer. Started in my 20’s and at 46, I’ve had ~100 removed. I stopped counting.

All that said, fishing shirts are great because they are lightweight and breathable. Any will do. The more expensive ones can be wrinkle-free if you care about wearing off the water.

Pro tips:
Pop the collar to protect the back of the neck.
Wear same shirts for lawn work, etc
Always wear a wide brim hat
Wear sunscreen every single day. The best is Elta MD. Goes on clear, doesn’t get in your eyes, non-greasy, etc. Don’t forget your ears (front/back/bowl), nose creases, etc.

Good luck.
