Looks like new regulations are coming. What will the new regs be ? Lower bag limit? higher minimum length ? Slot ?

“Our latest assessment of spotted seatrout in Louisiana shows that the stock is overfished—i.e. the size of the spawning population is below the minimum level established for the stock. When a stock is overfished, we must take action to rebuild the population back to (or above) the target level. We are currently considering several options for management changes to reduce harvest levels and allow the stock to recover.”

LDWF actually announced today they’re pushing the decision back until October 2022. Seems like they’ve been talking about doing this for a couple years now and decided to kick the decision back another year. Make a call and get it over with.

Idk about you but 15" fish are rare. Hell limits have been rare for me lately. I would be okay with 10 fish 12"

I think A LOT of trout will die from this after being hooked and released, trying to meet the 15" minimum. I say keep it 12", drop the limit to 15 if they absolutely need to change it

It's fine the way it is. No science showing otherwise and lets be honest, not many people outside of guides catch a limits of trout anyway.

yeah the amount of throwbacks that people would go through to get a limit of 15 inch trout would be incredible

There is actually about a 90% survival rate for speckled trout that re released. Most fish that die have Hill trauma. Speckled truth has a podcast on the topic

I've posted this before but our state is in the stone age when it comes to scientific research on our inshore fisheries. Harte institute of Texas did a study that showed if trout are released they have a high survival rate. Gill damage and gut hook are the only two situations where they saw survival drop off.

I could get behind this. Plenty of people would keep those 11 1/2” trout and make an early day of it. Allowance for one trophy trout.

Are recreational fisherman REALLY doing that much damage to the population or is it more environmentally driven? Went a couple of weeks ago with 2 other guys; 22 specks, and if 15" was the limit I don't know if we would have kept more than 1 or 2.

Plenty of times working birds and sorting through 50+ throwbacks on trout within a 1/2 inch of legal. It’s the big females that do the most during the spawn so it would make sense to protect them.

It goes hand in hand. Environment degradation coupled with the large amount of recreational anglers every day that push for their 25/person lead to more overall percentage loss.

25 fish today takes more out of the stock than 25 from 20 -30 yrs ago.

The department's hands are tied. The political board that runs it is scared to death to loose license sales or do anything that may reduce the number of out of state fisherman. We never do what is right by the wildlife here because of the board. The biologists don't get enough power. It is bull crap.

The limit needs to drop and the minimum length needs to go up. That in itself would keep people from pounding 200 schoolies to get 50 keepers. Most of those sub 12" fish die when let go.

People here are too greedy.
