Bought a house, haven’t moved in yet.
The previous owners haven’t lived there in over a year and the yard hasn’t been kept up in over a year.
We’re going to completely remodel the home. I was there yesterday to meet the cabinet guy and saw a snake skin under the dishwasher. I hurried up and got rid of it before he showed up and more importantly before my wife and young children saw it. If they knew a snake was in there they would probably never go inside the house again.

Later in the day I walked inside and saw the thing poking it’s head up from under the dishwasher. Every man is scared of something.. snakes are my thing. Hate them and don’t want anything to do with them.

I have seen mouse/rat droppings in the house so I’m sure it’s just chasing after them. I plan on putting out rat bait tomorrow and hopefully if no mice then no snake.

Anyone have a similar experiences or advice? I’m freaking out and need some advice

Tell the wife and record her reaction.

Removing food source should get the snake out. Have a snake grabber handy in case you see it. I’d be surprised if it were a venomous snake. More than likely a rat snake. Also find where it got in.

No need to worry. It just came in to have its babies.

Right on. That'll fix the rat and mouse problem.

I have caught some small 12in snakes in a sticky trap for rats. I imagine 4 or 5 in series would catch a larger one.

First off, you have a rodent infestation in the house. It’s been vacant for over a year and no telling how many mice, rats are having babies. The snake you saw is likely a rat snake. Non-poisonous, they can climb walls, can reach 5-6 feet long, and wreak havoc on rodents and birds.

Get rid of the mice and the snake won’t have a good source

Snakes can live a long time without food. He can go months before he realizes his food source is gone.

If you saw his head,he's probably under there. Tip it over and grab him or just roll the dishwasher outside.

Then call the pest man to address the population of stuff in the place

I’d prefer the snake over the rats

Whole house fumigation services are out there. Perhaps consult with someone that offers it. Not sure it’ll kill the snakes but at least send them packing

Just dealt with this at my mother’s house late last Fall. My father passed a few years back, and she hates snakes.

She was sitting at the kitchen table and looked over and saw a “large snake” heading down the hall toward the bedrooms. She called the neighbor who came over with his son to take a look. They find it in the back of her closet, but can’t get to it as it heads into a crack in the baseboards.
She called an exterminator, who of course couldn’t do anything. We put traps and sticky pads all over her room and the hallway, and she sleeps at our place for a while. Every day I go over to check the traps, and they’re empty. At that point, I assume he’s hibernating. She eventually starts staying at her house, but sleeps in a guest room.

Fast forward to April or so and she comes into the kitchen one morning to find it curled up on a mat in the Sun by the rear French doors. She grabbed a bucket and threw over it, then the neighbor came over and dealt with it. Wound up being a beautiful speckled king snake.

Put rodent bait stations throughout the inside and several on the exterior. I killed a house cat by putting out poison. The stations will keep kids from getting into it as well

Since you and your family are afraid of snakes, get a professional out there and do it the right way. Since you're redoing the entire house, the last thing you want is sub to leave a job site because of snakes and rats. You wife will thank you for it later!

The bad news is you probably have a rat infestation and an access point for a snake. The good news is theyre most likely both harmless with some decent judgement and hygiene. I would worry about getting rid of the rats first and foremost. I would suggest trying your best to snap trap them because rotting rats from poison smells pretty bad. Once they're gone just try to catch the damn snake and seal up your house. Then start working on preventative stuff outside the house. Not sure how you're going to hide all this from your family.

This. Screw sticky traps to a 1X4”, once it gets stuck to the trap, it will get caught by the rest of the Sticky’s.

A couple screws, the dishwasher will slide right out. Another way.

Without your personal items in the house there’s not many places for a snake to hide OP. Remove the appliances and put them in the corner of the house or something. Have a friend come over and help and catch the snake as said it’s most likely not poisonous.

As said you need to look for places the snake got in, that’s also how rodents would be getting in.
