I pray Trump harps on Joes reasons for leaving California.
Yes, once or twice. It was just after college when I moved to a new town and hit a Saturday matinee or two. Great way to break up the day before getting settled into your new town and before figuring out the dating scene.

I’ve mentioned it to my clients and none have been very concerned as “it was very small”. Can’t imagine what it would take to get their attention….

Woke up a few more times throughout the night and I swear there were tremors or aftershocks. Or maybe I was dreaming?!?!

Earthquake While Travellig

Posted by SeasonOfSam on 5/25/24 at 11:05 am
I am in Tokyo for business, where it is currently 1am on the 26th. I woke up a few minutes ago to use the restroom and either there was a huge wind gust or I experienced my first earthquake.

There was a low rumble and the hotel swayed back and forth for about 10 seconds. No damage I can detect, and there are no sirens or evacuation orders. Gusss I’ll have to wait and see if the local news reports it.

Anyone ever experience an earthquake while traveling?

ETA: Confirmed 4.7 magnitude off the coast!

Seems like the mantra at the time Elon took over Twitter was that him laying off thousands of employees would reduce the quality / efficiency of production there? And they turned out to not miss a beat. Guess they really were all non-essential.
I know of two instances where the perp(s) got caught:

1. Minority students sitting behind me in an engineering mid-term exam. The whole class could hear them discussing the questions out loud. The professor found out, took their exams, and reported them to the Dean. Next class, they were back in their seats.

2. A fraternity brother whose father was a relatively known lawyer attempted to steal a copy of a final exam for his gf. Somehow he caught wind that another Section of the class was going to see the same exam as her, so he attended the earlier section’s exam time slot, then attempted to just walk out w a copy of the exam. The professor attempted to stop him so he threw a chair, etc. and was ultimately caught. He was kicked out of LSU. His father helped him get a new SS number, then he re-enrolled the next year like nothing happened.
Serious question—what are you planning to do in Naples?

We caught the train from Rome to Napoli Centrale, then a taxi to the port, and a ferry to Capri. That was enough of Naples for us.
We just got back from Rome, Capri, Positano. We didn’t rent a car, but will tell you the driving around Amalfi is brutal. Combine buses and mopeds with the narrow streets, and you’re in for a different world of crazy. And that’s before peak summer tourist season. Also, there’s virtually no parking in any of the cities.

If you’ve been, you may have an idea of what you’re getting into. If you’re comfortable driving, then I’m sure it would be a fun experience.
Also, skip Naples.

Some locals say there is some charm to the city, but didn’t miss much by not staying there. Just dealing with the crowds from the train station to the taxi to the ferry was enough. That’s a whole other breed.
Sitting in the airport in Rome (FCO) after 3 days in Rome, 3 days in Capri, 4 days in Positano, back to Rome for one night.

Took the train from Rome to Naples, then took the ferry to Capri for 2 nights. AnaCapri is worth seeing and the chair lift is cool, but you can see it in one day. A day trip ferry is plenty.

Positano was a perfect home base for Amalfi. We did a boat tour w Positano Boat Tours that stopped in Amalfi (town) for a few hours. That was enough.

Took buses for a day trip to Ravello for a few hours. That was enough.

As others have said, when in Rome, pay for the “skip the line” tickets. After waiting in line to enter the Vatican, as you’re leaving the Sistine Chapel, tours go right and individuals go left. Tours are able to go directly to St Peters Basilica, while individuals are routed to another line that stretched all the way around St Peters Square to gain access to the Basilica.

Plenty of info here, but happy to share more.

Good luck in July. We had absolutely perfect weather and we were ahead of the “busy season”. July will be hot and busy. Book everything now.
My wife and I just left Rome, and are currently in Capri.

In Rome, we found the best single thing we did was a private golf cart tour of the city. It was just us and the driver. He asked what we had seen and what we were interested in, then gave us a custom trip around the city. He stopped at a few spots for us to explore at our pace, or just drove past some spots that we had already seen. The total trip was 3 hours, and that was perfect. It gave us a great starting point for anything else we wanted to tour.

It was “Turtle Tours”, but we booked it through The Tour Guy.
Highly recommend a snorkeling day trip to Culebra—“The Spanish Virgin Islands”

The wharf show was the same way.

I was at that show. Sound wasn’t great, but I attributed it to being open air.

But I was pretty disappointed in the overall performance. I’ve seen them maybe 8-10 times prior, but that was before their break. While the rest of the band was into the show, Evan seemed to be growing through the motions. I’m a huge fan, but that show fell flat for me. So much so that I didn’t even care to check ticket pricing / availability when this show was announced.

I used to tell people that the best option is to buy your own plane for training as I was fortunate that I found a young CFI with his own plane (PA-28-160) just trying to build time to make the jump to airline. Once he got called up, I bought the plane from him (18 hours total at the time) and found a new independent CFI.

HOWEVER, this was in 2016 and I bought the plane for $22k. That same plane today would be $50-$60k.It was absolutely perfect for me, and I used it to build tons of hours but likly not as feasible today.

Now I am in a 4 person partnership on a PA-28-235 (250hp conversion) at NEW and absolutely love it.

Of course, most partnerships don't want student pilots due to the potential wear and tear on the plane.

I did my work at Lakefront NOLA (KNEW) and really believe that having the Tower / Controlled factor early made it easy to get a handle on my radio work. You can typically tell a pilot that did not train at a controlled airport when they get on the radio with the Tower.

I performed most of my maneuvering work in the "Practice Area" (East of I-10 Twin Spans), but did tons of TNG's in Slidell (KASD) and Picayune (KMJD)--both of which are uncontrolled--but always flew into and out of KNEW.

I worked with an Admin a few years back who also happened to be the daughter of a Senior PM, and the granddaughter of a prominent family. She was bitching one day about being broke. But as we discussed it further, it boiled down to her "buying whatever she "wants".

I tried to explain to her that it may be easier to think of the purchase price in terms of hours / work (after taxes). For example, if you bring home $20/hr after taxes then this $500 purse is the equivalent of 25 hours of work. She looked me square in the eye and said "That's not going to work b/c if I want it, I'm going to buy it."

Fast forward a few years and I saw her drive through the drop off at the Dry Cleaners driving a brand new Denali with two kids in the back.

She was from Old Metairie, btw, so she may be one of the aforementioned "Now Ex Wives"..... In that case, I'm sorry. I tried.

re: How to raise a shed?

I think you've oversimplified this project.

How wide is the shed? What size ceiling joists does it now have? How much load per sq. ft. will be in the 2nd floor when finished? Are the inside walls covered or just open studs?

The width of the shed will determine what size lumber has to be used to separate the 2 floors and that is anywhere from 2 x 6 to 2 x 12's depending on the span and the load you plan on putting in the 2nd floor area.

You need to check local building codes to get a better idea what you're facing in materials alone.

Everything Gumbo2176 said....

This is not the "OT Lounge", so don't take this as me being a smart-a$$. BUT if you are asking your question and have not considered any of the points Gumbo2176 mentioned, then I cannot recommend highly enough that you not try this.

Great song. I've always thought of Dirt as a continuation or even finishing of the LHL story...

Long Island

Long Island is on our list. Thank you for the quick confirmation that I need to get there quickly.

I've been to various islands, but Harbour Island has been my favorite trip to date. We stayed at Coral Sands, rented a golf cart for the duration, and rented a boat for a day and hit "Pig Island", then Spanish Wells for lunch, then stopped at a few undeveloped islands on the way back.
