Should one avoid Sierra 5.3 with AFM

Looking at trucks and the GMC Sierra slt deals with leather v8 4x4 crew cabs have me thinking hard at GMC for 40k since ford comparable price wise you are still in an xlt with no leather and to me the interior pales in comparison in the ford.
However I have an innate sense of fear of the AFM system and it’s oil burning and lifter problems and wonder if it’s really worth staying away from.

Nah. The problems (like everything else on the internet) have been drastically overblown.

The problems are overblown, but when you do have an issue, it’s usually pretty serious.
However, you can have a mechanic override the AFM.

I have 2014 with AFM and have not had any issues with the oil consumption or sticking lifters, but you can get a range delete device that plugs in and turns off the AFM.

From what I understand the newer AFM 5.3’s don’t have the same problem. I have a 2010 Sierra and my truck burns about 2 quarts of oil every 4000 miles. I also had a lifted collapse and had to replace all of the lifters.
Like I said the new body style trucks since 2013 don’t have the same AFM issues like my 2010.

had a 2010 with the issues, had to have the top end rebuilt at 45k miles. its the main thing that steered me away from the 2018. and I've always driven GM

you guys are scaring the hell out of me, i'm looking to buy a 1/2 ton PU (Chevy, GMC, Ford, frick dodge), and now have no idea what I should buy (new or used), had a great old truck (1996 chevy 1500 5.7 vortec v8) in great shape, never had a problem, recently sold it to my mechanic and now regret it, that "big devil" was outstanding, what say the OB?

I have a 2011 with 130k and no issues. I deleted the AFM with a tuner at 120k and I’ve always run Mobil 1 and good filters

You should have never sold the 96.

I had a 2010 and if it sat more than 10 hours a hand full of lifters lost their pressure and chattered pretty loud when it was started. This along with many other reasons to sell that truck. I hear the newer ones don’t have that issue but have oil pressure problems.

They don't chew camshafts up like the past set up 07-13, but the active fuel management lifters on the newer ones do collapse from time to time and cause a horrific misfire condition.

The problems with oil consumption with AFM were on the old bodystyle trucks. The 5.3 in the 2014+ is a different motor.

True. The newer ones went to direct injection and had some other new features. It is also the second evolution of the active fuel management.
I have a 2010 Yukon Denali with 140K on the clock. I had the AFM disabled electronically after I dropped a lifter at 99k miles. You can buy a full AFM delete kit that changes out all the physical parts and it will run just as well as your old 90s GM truck.
Ever since turning it off electronically, haven't had a single issue with the motor. It also has never had issues with oil consumption but maybe I'm just lucky in that category. If I could take this motor with me to the next vehicle I buy, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Then again, it's the 6.2 with 400 ponies so that part is pretty intoxicating.

I have a 2008 with 100k miles that burns a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I buy it by the case.

I just bought a 2018 Silverado. I aint worried about any issues, because I was told my 2012 Tundra should have lasted me forever, and at 140k miles, the cam tower seal began leaking. So, i guess what im getting at is that all the brands have issues. Just take care of it the best you can, and keep your fingers crossed. I got a 5 year 120k mile warranty on that bitch.
Eta: i got the 5.3 2wd

have you tried tuning out the AFM to see if it reduces oil consumption? I bought a diablo intune I3 to do mine.

I haven't. I did compare oil consumption with around town driving vs highway miles and didn't see a difference which makes me think at this point it doesn't matter. I do use seafoam now hoping it will make the rings last longer.
