i bought an old house in the country with a large empty lot adjacent, so I have room to build whatever kind of shop I want/need/can afford.

I want to store lawn mowers, bikes, etc as well as set up a home gym in the shop. I'd also like to include a small not fancy kitchen and a 1/2 bath.

I initially thought a 20x30 pole barn was the best option, but I've been told to go bigger.

What would y'all do?
What's your shop size and setup? Happy with it?

Any experience with manufacturer/installers you want to share? I've heard mixed reviews of Mallett.

Whatever size shop you have, just realize that you'll quickly fill it up with shite. More space = more crap

Go as big as you can fit/afford. There's no such thing as too big of a shop. 20x30 would likely be too small for what you want to do. A kitchen, 1/2 bath, and home gym will quickly eat up a large majority of your space.

I built a 30 x 40 .I used a Carolina carport and had it closed in on all sides with three roll up doors and a regular door and 2 windows . I added water in it just not the kitchen and bathroom . I wish i had the kitchen and bathroom after we flooded .If i had to do it over again i would do 40 x 60 to give enough room to leave my boat hooked to the truck .I spray foamed mine as well If you are going to have any type of sparks in the building foam will need to be covered . I have about 30k in mine with all the dirt work concrete plumbing and electric and hvac .

I have a 24' by 40' combo shop/siting area. My shop is 24' by 24' then a 24' by 16' covered siting area. There is no bathroom because my house is only 40' away. I have a sink, freezer, beer refrigerator on the inside. All cooking equipment is on wheels and I roll it out to use.

I own other sheds to store all my boats and ATV, so I didn't need it for that.

Mine is wood frame with brick veneer to match my house.

I would go at least 40x50, and bigger if you can afford it.

Call it 20k and just go ahead and tell me if that's unrealistic.

As everyone said, think about the size you want and go bigger. Not ridiculous bigger.
I considered a 20x 24 or 24x24. I ended up getting a 24x 30. I only wish mine was taller.
I've got 10' sides and not much pitch. I have shelves on one side, cabinets across the back wall and halfway across the side wall. Pool table, sink, full size fridge, lawn mower, 4 wheeler and a golf cart. Plus tons and tons of junk all over. If I'd ever clean it up, it would be enough for me, but if you don't keep yours organized it will never be big enough.

The 15k price they advertise is for basic everything... Galvalume color, non-treated boards, etc.

Once you start adding the options to make your building decent your price will go up $2,000-$3,000 probably.

Mallett built my 30'x40' with the premium package (colored metal, fascia, skirt board protectors, post protectors, 50 year treated wood, and 4 on 12 pitched roof) and I added an additional roll up door and went up to 12' eave height.

My building was $10,700 and then I poured my own concrete for about $2,000.

My building with all of those options and the concrete from Mallett was quoted at about $15,800 if I remember right.

I'm planning one now. 24x36 was as big as I could fit. I'm going full insulated metal on slab, 14' walls with a loft on one end, roll up doors on each end, one 4' walk through door and a framed opening for an AC. Price will be $18-19k and the slab will be ~$4k.

Damn that seems like a deal. You go through a contractor or the place that sells the materials?

By the way thanks everyone for the responses I am reading them all trying to learn.

I have a 40x40. Just re did the entire thing myself. I have 10' eaves, 16' at ridge. I just spray foamed, added electrical circuits for 220 and A/C. Spray foamed, put dust collection in walls, built walls painted floor and added a mini split. I almost don't want to go inside anymore. Just need a bigger beer fridge, Directv and a couch and I'll live out there!

If you have time check out garage journal. They have plenty of folks with build threads on their shops. For all that you want us go at least 20' x 30'. If possible I'd also go with 14' walls and put in a loft and use that area for the gym.

Town and Country Builders

Not sure where you are located but John Smith built mine. 50 x 50 pole barn and 40 x 60 cedar board and batten barn. He goes all over MS, LA and Alabama. Great guy, great numbers and does it when he says. I have two more for him in a few months.

I called a few contractors and all were very close on price of the building and labor. Each additional 2 ft in height added ~$600 so I went to 14' The biggest issue I had was the slab work. I had 2 quotes, one for $9k and one for $10k which were ridiculous. I found a crew to form and finish for $1.85/ft and the concrete will cost ~$2/ft, so the slab will cost me less than $4k.
