How hard is it to register a trailer that doesn't have any papers in LA?

Getting TWO conceal carry permits, NOT using online, is easier.

Unfortunately nowadays it's about impossible. Might have a better chance at the Feds giving us a long snapper season

Get someone from Ms to walk into the tax office, tell them they have a homemade trailer with whatever serial number you want, they will give them the size and issue a tag and paper work. Make a bill of sale for a dollar to match the serial number with the tax paperwork from Mississippi.

Is it a manufactured trailer, not home made, has a VIN? What state is it from? Louisiana and Mississippi require trailers to be registered so if it wasn't, that's going to be the problem.
Just went thru this. Took 9 months. Bought a boat last July and got the plate and title last month.
You have to get a Justice of The Peace to get a Judgement of Possession for you. It involves the JotP petitioning the DMV to do a history search on the trailer to ensure there's no hiccups in the title history. After calling her every month for 9 months, the JotP I was dealing with finally gave up waiting on the DMV and issued me the judgement without getting verification from the DMV. Took the judgement paperwork to the DMV and walked out in 20 minutes with a plate and registration and received the title in the mail in a week.

the way it works, as told to me by a state trooper who does the inspections is,
if you claim to have a home made trailer you want to register, they come to your house or arrange for you to meet them at a time and place for inspection, and you need to have bill of sale showing sufficient types and amount of materials that is visibly consistent with the trailers construction as well as the trailer must "appear" to be home made construction (no machine bent tubing) then they issue you vin numbers that get stamped on the frame and give you a certificate of inspection to bring to DMV so it can be registered and licensed and they will mail you your "real" title.
now if you try this and they can tell its not home made, its not just a ticket and fine, you get those, but you also get arrested for attempted fraudulent registration and that can be jail time.
it aint worth it and the trooper I spoke to says they don't play, they know damn well what a home made vs manufactured trailer looks like.

Curious as well. Have one that might have been registered in La in the 90s but not sure. Bought it from a guy in Ms who remodeled it. Can't find numbers stamped anywhere on it

So if I have the equipment and the skill, I shouldn't make a trailer because it'll look too good?

In Alabama just bring in the serial number of the trailer, indicate no bill of sale ( if you don't have one), pay fee, sign, and it is registered with plate/tag is issued.

If you don't have your papers you're gonna have a bad time.

Bump for info.
I have utility trailers made from cargo containers. I "think" they were made in TX, but I have no clue who made em. The comoany in Miss that had them built, never registered them after buying.
This was 8+ yrs ago. The Miss company owed me $ and let me have them for unlimited use. And the Miss company has been out of business for 5 yrs and the owner has moved and I cannot contact and doesn't want to be contacted (they went bankrupt)
So basically, I have 2 trailers, built by someone I don't know, no VIN's from what I can tell, never registered with plates, but I need a way to have them registered so I can put plates on them.
Ideas?

A good bump for this. Register the trailer in Vermont. You don’t have to be a citizen of Vermont and you don’t need a title. Just a bill of sale and you mail in a tax check with the registration form. They will mail you a registration and license plate. Once you get that in the mail, you go to a Louisiana DMV and transfer everything over like you are moving from Vermont to Louisiana. You will receive a Louisiana plate and title

That's insane to me that it's that hard to register a trailer without papers there. I realize there are some pros to being so stringent, but I and everyone I know gets along just fine without such massive oversight.
I'd of been fricked many times over if MS were so stringent. Out of all the boats I've owned, I only registered one if the accompanying trailers with the real manufacturer, model and serial #. The rest were homemade, with serial numbers made up on the spot in the courthouse.
Damned politicians and their regulations. A "law a day will keep ya freedoms away," as I always say.

funny how people don't seem to have trouble keeping track of the title to the nut hauling F350 but always lose it for their trailers. Not too hard to put a piece of paper in a drawer and not move it.

I just registered a 1957 boat trailer with the original title and it looked like I gave them the magna carta and a bill of sale. They hardly knew what to do with it and made me put $100 value even though Im going to have to put more than that into it. Its a scam but if you dont have the papers find another trailer

Really?? Dad had 5-6 trailers when he died and on titles to two. All had plates, some were expired 10-15 years. Bend the corner where tag goes and carry on.

Well hell naw! A pickup is waaay different than an old trailer.
If you'd of seen the raggedy arse collection of boat trailers I've owned over the years you'd know why nobody knows wth kinda identification they used to have after 6 coats of chitty paint jobs on em.
I'm gonna know where my truck title is at. My widow maker boat trailer...not so much.

I just bought a small old bass boat with zero paperwork. Owner died 3 years ago and none of his kids had the papers. Surely it can't be impossible to get it. I have a bill of sale and the boat and trailer were both registered until '18.
