Just returned from the 2021 Purina retriever awards banquet where my dog was recognized as the 2021 High Point Field Trial Derby Dog. Her name is Bayou Magic’s Fannie Quigley. What an honor and thrill it has been to train and handle this sweet dog. Never dreamed of this, and honestly still have a hard time believing it.

Congratulations! And great job by Fannie at the meet and for your hours of working with her. Black Labs are my favorite breed. Beautiful, smart, dedicated and just great all around dogs.

I prefer a pit bull. To each their own.

Fannie is 3 now but the derby award is for dogs under 2. The awards banquet was postponed twice by Purina for various reasons.

How old was she in that picture? Pretty black dog for sure. Did you train her, or did you send her off? I don’t see how you can train a dog up to that caliber and have a full time job, too.

Edit: we’ll it was easier before I got married and had a kid lol

I think she was around 18 months old when I made the picture. I’ve always trained and handled my own dogs, and Fannie is no exception. I’m retired now which certainly helps, but I’ve trained and handled an FC AFC and an GRHRCH while working full time. It can without a doubt be done.

Fannie is simply a freak. Sweetest most compliant dog ever with excellent eyesight and high prey drive. Just a great combination.

Young parents with kids is a different story. Extremely difficult to pull that off. Time demands to be competitive in field trials can be too much especially when you have small kids. Unfortunately it isn’t a great family sport for that reason. However, many families have a ton of success and fun in the hunt test game. This isn’t a knock on hunt tests, in fact I highly recommend it.

She looks older to me in that picture. I guess it is because of her eyes and how focused she is.

That black dog I have that I turned into a pet/do it all type dog, ( we talking jack of all trades, master of none), is 18 months and had the FHO when he was 5-6 months old so he lost roughly 6+ months of training, but there is no way he would have been that calm/focused. Female- I know, but I have never seen a female with that look at that age. I have hunted with a stud, and he was laser focused. He was still pup at that age and didn’t get out of it until he right at 2-2.5. Then he was lights out ribbon winner, and I’m talking turned down upper 5 figure checks. (Crazy shite for most to understand I know, but even crazier is that the dog got ran over before he could even get a pup off of him).

I love my male dogs, but that girl is about to/could make you a nice down payment on something.

I found the original photo. She was 21 months old when taken. In the pic below she was 16 months old. She had just won the Lone Star derby and placed second in the qualifying.

She jammed an Amateur at 22 months that gave her the QA2 title, jammed an open at 27 months and has aOpen 2nd and 3rd as a 2 year old. The dog continues to amaze me and I’ve been doing the a long time.

BTW, she is not for sale. Someone is going to have a lot of fun running her. It might as well be me.

That's a terrible name, but Brawndo has electrolytes.
