I'm bringing this over from the SEC OT Board.

There's been a severe shortage for a long time of people that can play Taps at military funerals; any of you guys musically inclined or have family members or friends that can and would volunteer to play Taps at military funerals in your area? If so contact your local military bases (their Honor Guard) or local VFWs.....you would be doing some vets and their families a great service.

My dad is a Vietnam era veteran and is in the American Legion. His honor guard team has an electric bugle they hold up like they're playing and it. Obviously, it's not as good as a live musician, but it works for them.

Correct.

We were lucky enough to have someone play it for my grandfathers funeral but we were told it's very had to find people to do it.

I have heard of funerals that do it with just a speaker setup.

i can tell you that at my dad's funeral it was played live. VERY impressive, as well as the flag folding. Very proud of the whole thing. held it together pretty well until i heard that horn start......

Having said that, i cannot play anything outside of the air drums.

I was in DC Monday and visited Arlington Cemetary. I was able to see a group of Honor Flight veterans from Texas. They presented the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown. Seeing the process, watching those elderly veterans get out of their wheel chairs to salute was something to appreciate. Then while Taps was being played there was a 21 gun salute from a funeral that was in progress. There were not many dry eyes there.

We just had my grandfathers funeral in small town Arkansas. The honor guard came out of Little Rock.

I still get chills thinking about them yelling off in the distance and the guns firing.

I lost it when they started playing Taps then handing my grandmother the flag.

My dad was a Marine. When he passed unexpectedly in 2009, I lived in N. Alabama where I live now and I had to hustle up a bugler, honor guard and rifle team. I did the only thing I knew to do...I called the I&I staff at the Marine Reserve Center in Lafayette and all they needed was his DD214 to prove honorable discharge conditions (which was easy) and they provided what they could. They were short a couple of riflemen but I was ok with that. Bugler was a sailor they had contacts with which was pretty awesome if you knew my Dad...he served in Vietnam as a Navy Seabee before later becoming a Marine..so to have both there was awesome.

Now when the time comes for my mom to be buried...that'll prove a little harder since I don't know where her DD214 is nor do I know where the USN equivalent of an I&I is in Louisiana. But I'm sure I can do my best..and if she has Marines..that's ok too...when she was a corpsman before an officer she was attached to a Marine unit.

The majority are like this now. Same at my fathers funeral. If you didn’t ask most wouldn’t know it.

a unit from the navy reserve did the colors and taps at my uncles funeral in Hammond last spring. I called the national guard office at the Hammond airport and they put me in touch with them. It was very emotional for everyone and something I’ll never forget

OK, how hard would it be to learn taps on a bugle? How hard would it be to play taps at a funeral?
Would a non-military person be able to contribute if he/she could play? I think it would be a great way to give back if one could do it right.

That's a hard no and I'm sorry to have to tell you if you were interested in doing it. Teaching a veteran would be an incredible gift though.

21 rifle volley or 21 gun (artillery)?

Been awhile since I was at a gun service. Pretty loud, but awesome.

Probably not hard, no more than couple of months of practice.. the issue is being able to get up in front of a funeral and play under pressure without making an arse of yourself.

The only time I've heard it was in high school at a friend's dad's funeral.

A man in his late 80s did his best. But he struggled with breath.

Found out after the fact that he was commander where my buddy's dad was in Korea.

I was proud to shake his hand.

I thought he meant as part of the color guard. Sorry I misunderstood.

My dad was a Vietnam veteran also from 66-68. He was in 191st assault helicopter company. He died unexpectedly in 2010. The veterans group he was a part of at the VA setup the bugler and riflemen. I wasn’t fine by any means but lost it when I heard TAPS. It gives me chills to this day to hear that. I’m glad he got that final honor.
