I am in the market for a boat, but am not a boater. I have kids and need something to trolly around Orange Beach and Perdido, then take them fishing sown the river in the off season. I don't want to spend a ton. Can you guys tell me why a Bass Buggy would be a good/bad choice. They have decent used ones for under 10k and new ones for 15kish. What are their limitations?

Money pit. Rent a boat on occasion or buy kayaks.

Pros: it’s a floating porch that can pull a tube for some low key riding. Throw some Astro turf down, get a keg, light the Bar-B-Q, and you’ve got a solid day on the water.

You should look into Freedom boat club. I think they have one down there.

You join the club and have access to all their different boats. You have to schedule ahead of time, but they have all different types of boats and keep them ready to go. They take care of all the maintenance and even gas if you want. Just jump in and go fishing, or riding, or both if you want.

Pontoon boats can hit their top speed faster than hulled boats.

my dad just bought a Bass Buggy. Hasn't even put it in the water yet. Being able to step onto the deck rather than over the gunwale were his biggest selling point for him and my mother since both have bad knees. Its for floating and taking sight seeing cruises with a little bit of fishing with the grand kids.

My first impressions with it is that it seems to be built well. THE interior ids a good quality, vinyl on the seats is thick enough it should last with proper care. The hull and deck has a life time warranty.

Pontoons can be a PITA to dock or load with some wind, how bad, I'm sure I will find out at some point this summer.

Don’t know about Orange beach, but in TB it’s perfect for crappie fishing brush piles.

I guess one pro would be filling it with bikini clad honeys and alcohol.

I don’t know that particular boat but there are generally no cons to a pontoon boat for a fun day on the water. I also use mine as a barge

I store my party barge in Foley and use it every time I go to OBA. Cruise around the back bays, bar hop, find a private beach. My favorite part of going to the Beach. Would not trade it for anything different

I don't know anything about bass buggy but my dad is picking up a 2018 20' tracker on Friday. We already have a fishing boat at the camp and he wanted something he could just putt putt around the river on when I am using the fishing boat.

Like someone else said, pontoons are nice for family/large groups/ etc when getting somewhere fast is not an issue and you just want to relax.

Depends on how much you plan to use it.

I use our boat pretty much every weekend from April-October and then any winter weekend with good weather. We bought it new in 2010 and get it serviced every February. I've never had any major issues on the water because they've been caught when servicing and fixed before they become major/expensive.

If you only plan to fish a few times a year then charter is the way to go

If you just want to cruise the river once a month then make friends with someone who owns a boat

Know someone who had a camp and their dad bought one to keep down there. At first we thought it wasted a boat slip. Turns out it was pretty damned awesome to take to the marina for dinner (about a 45 minute slow putt putt ride). There are two things I like to do on a boat, fish and drink. They at least are good for one of them .

I had a friend that kept a pontoon boat at his camp in Empire. We would use it during the fall and winter to go fish the holes in Hospital and Yellowcotton Bays. It was perfect for that, plenty of room.

I am in the market for a boat, but am not a boater.

Please, please, take as many boating courses as possible before purchase. We have enough non-boaters on the water now without adding another. Buy some traffic cones and learn to back up in a large parking lot, it will save you time and dirty looks at the ramp.

Funny most of you say putt-putt around, you can rig pontoons to fly these days.

Forget pontoon boats. The best action is always on the pornpoon boats.
