for what it's worth...

had a 2006 Tundra double cab...lil brother (65) passed away 2 years ago and left me his 2015 Silverado ext. cab...
because his truck was 10 yrs newer I traded in my Tundra to get the wife a loaded Toyota Highlander...
while the Silverado is nice I wish I had traded the Chevy and kept the Tundra...

My wife use to drive an f350 dually in high school. It was ragged out but reliable diesel. Farm family.

Your kid can handle a tundra.

Your Tundra is just getting broken in. Mine's got a little over 300k on it and going strong. Do the basic maintenance, and they will run for a long, long, long time. I met one guy who had one very similar to mine with 450k on his and he had no plans to get rid of it.

Should have seen the shite I got into in my ‘93 4x4 Toyota with the 4 banger! That thing would go through anything, only time I ever got stuck was when I high centered it. Personally, I would pass the tundra on to him when he turns 16, I don’t think having a bigger or smaller truck will make a difference as long as he is a somewhat responsible kid.

Financially the answer is always a resounding NO. Unless you have some special vehicle that appreciates over time despite external market trends, it never makes sense to get rid of a vehicle to pay for another one.

You should buy yourself a new truck and give him your old one, which has tons of life left in it. He can learn to drive it easily.

Alternatively, buy him an older cheaper POS as a gift and tell him he can have a new one when he can afford it.

You have one of the most reliable trucks you can own, it's paid off and still have easily another 125k to go. Definitely don't sell it.

Absolutley this. Keep the truck, give it to your son in a year. He's got a car that's probably more reliable than a one year old Chrysler.

My 2012 Tundra Crewmax with the 5.7 has 200k on it and runs like new. One issue is the Tundra is so big (and powerful), it may not be the best for a kid.

I will be looking to get rid of a 2007 Tundra with about 135,000 miles on it. For an old truck it runs great. I have another truck on order. I have no idea how to find a buyer if the dealership is not interested in trade. I don't do Facebook. There is always Craig's List but I don't want to sell to the public. Too big a pain in the arse.
Maybe I can get 8 grand for it.

I’m looking at slightly used Rams and Tundras. My main concern with the Tundra is poor gas mileage but I’m not sure the Rams are a lot better.

Give truck to kid and get you another one. I learned on a full size ram and a bronco when I was in HS.

You shouldn't have much trouble getting $8k for it. If you were in Alabama, I might know someone who would take it off your hands as long as it was otherwise in good shape. Carmax would give you an offer. Sometimes their offers are good, sometimes not. I've sold one car to them, have also sold two cars through my long time mechanic who knew people who needed something.

If it is clean and you have 2 keys I would try Carmax or some of the others. They are lowballing most vehicles now compared to what they were doing a year ago but a 2007 low mileage Tundra, if clean, is probably worth about $8k to them.....they'll list it if they don't take it to auction for around $17K LOL.....

This. Full size truck seems like a terrible idea for a 16-19 year old kid OP.

If you get something like a Tacoma with 120,000 miles it will easily Last him through college.

I had beaters in HS and college and honestly I’m not sure what I’ll do with my kids. You really don’t want your kids driving nice vehicles as they will just trash them in Hs and college. But at the same time I understand reliability. But it’s not the 80s anymore, most vehicles are incredibly reliable to 200k miles or so if property basic maintenance is done and obvious signs of a problem are handled quickly.

More importantly he does it all without playing travel anything.

So you feel like you’re skimping your kid an owe him something more?

But then why the post about him making payments to you?

ATm Texas Dillo,

Where are you located. That sounds like a perfect truck for one of my landscape crews. I already have one that I use for a lawn crew and I’m looking for a similar truck for another crew for this coming season.
