That's the craziest statement that people say over and over again. You shouldn't have to rack your shotgun it should be hot at all times!

Out of those 2 choices I'm taking the pistol. Preferably a 9mm with 124gr HST or Gold Dots.

A shotgun is great if thats what you have, but if you're going out to get the perfect home defense weapon, it isnt any shotgun.

Well I've handled all three options and one of those doesn't require a ton of accuracy to inflict damage.

No it doesn’t.
I want to hear this argument

For home invasion the criminal will be within 15 feet likely. I know tons of people that will miss with a pistol from that distance, don’t know many bot connecting with a shotgun

I’ve seen actual people who are comfortable with handling a gun that wouldn’t inflict damage from 15 feet with a pistol. Your average person is going to completely miss the human body often

A shotgun they will be ending the threat almost every single time

The vast majority of shotguns are only drop safe on an empty chamber.

Unless you live in a war zone, having an empty chamber is statistically much safer than loaded chamber. Odds are ultra low you will ever need the gun at all.

Thou shall keep guns fully loaded no matter what is terrible advice when applied with a broad stroke.

I have a semi auto shotgun with 6+1 buckshot and a full size pistol with 18+1, both near me at night. I'd probably grab the pistol first because I shoot it way more and it has a light.

Just the presence of The Judge in the house, whether it's known to the intruder or not, will keep them away. You've been around here long enough to know that at least

This. I have a little kid and dogs, plus the neighbor kids are over all the time. IF you think I'm keeping a loaded and cocked shotgun laying around you are plain arse insane.

I keep a box of 3.5" shells on the top shelf and the gun is on a rack, action open. I can find it all in a few seconds if I hear glass shatter, drop a shell in the action and slide it shut. Two more in the magazine tube. Two steps and I'm covering the stairs up to the bedrooms. Not too worried about load time.

For me, the optimum solution is a bedside safe for my carry pistol. Its either in the safe or in holster and attached to me.

I personally think that people who have loaded guns all over the place in preparation for an invasion are a little bit

But, its america and its your right to do it. I think if you step back and objectively look at your options for self defense and consider realistic scenarios you'll find that having a pistol with a light very close and very accessible with a rifle somewhere safe but still relatively accessible is a good solution. Pistol close and quick for oh shite he's on top of me, or to get yourself to the rifle if you have time to do that.

Correct. A pistol is what you use to fight your way to a real weapon.

Personally, I've got my old duty Benelli somewhat accessible with one of my Glocks in the bedside night stand.

I don’t have kids in the house.
Any Intruder will likely endure both 12 gauge buckshot AND 9mm self defense rounds, AND maybe even a rifle caliber depending on the size of the gathering.
In fact I’m more likely to sneak around and lock the door behind them.

Most likely in the middle of the night I'm probably rolling out of bed and quickly heading to the threat in my conson with just these hands to assess the situation. I doubt that I'm coherent enough to safely operate a firearm safely in a freshly awoken half asleep state. Might work out for me, might not.

In a situation where I have clarity and a little time to act and I'm not sleeping, I'm going with the AR.

The main advantage for handguns is how good and affordable quick access lock boxes are now. You can securely and safely keep a 1911 cocked and locked with the safety off within arms reach and still get to it in a second if you were so inclined to do it. Im not aware of a comparable option for long guns. That alone makes pistols very appealing for home defense. You can keep the gun 100% secure and within arms reach 24/7, easily.

I have SBS 14” 870. That being said it’s a SHTF that will go with me. I keep a MP 2.0 and Mp5K suppressed by my bed.

Great points by a lot of you. Appreciate it.

Honestly don’t care about laws, etc…. Just want to eliminate any threat that would happen to break in when kids are here.

If I go to jail so be it….as long as
They are safe

My first line of defense is my daughter's annoying little mutt that will let me know if she hears any noise she thinks is a threat. Just like she did at 4:16am this morning when she must have heard the neighbors truck door shut leaving for work, I'm assuming, because that's what my doorbell camera showed when I checked it later this morning.

Then I have a handgun with 16+1 capacity and spare mag in my thumbprint nightstand safe, which will then allow me to get to my pistol grip 20ga shotgun in my master closet if necessary.

If it so happens that those are not enough, they will get me to my gun safe where the AR is with six loaded 30 round mags, in case its a full on zombie attack on my home.
