Pex vs Copper - New Home Construction

What's the pros and cons of each. I'm being told Pex would be cheaper initially. I feel like it could be also cheaper if repairs are needed. What's the OB's thoughts?

It’s your biggest investment that you’ll spen as much time in as work. Cheap ain’t it.

10' of 1/2" copper is about 15 bucks
10' of 1/2" pex is about 3 bucks

Pex is much easier to deal with. It’s the future of plumbing.

man, i really agree with this, especially because is the house i will die in. But the problem i'm running into with this line of thought, though, is that i'm thinking that with everything. "man, i'm going to be here forever, i can't go cheap on windows..." man, i'm going to be here forever, i can't go cheap on floors..." etc... So if i go a few thousand more on every item, i'll blow my budget quickly.
obviously if plumbing fails, that's a much bigger deal than if flooring or windows are defective. Just trying to weigh all the options...

PEX has been around many years, I don’t know if any downsides
Posted on 1/21/19 at 5:37 pm to poochie
I'm not aware of any downside to pex. That is a place to save money. I'm about to build and will be using it.

Pex is better option by far. If Pex breaks, which is pretty rare, its in a wall or attic. If copper breaks or isn't installed correctly, its in the slab. Copper corodes, Pex doesn't.

The local supply house has a section of pex they keep in the freezer. When it’s integrity gets questioned they pull it out, run warm water over it until it thaws, then throw it back in freezer to prove a point. It’s good stuff

It’s hard to find good plumbers that will do copper because pex isso much faster and cheaper most have converted.
The main advantage of Pex is almost 0 connections from your supply to your outlet. Make sure your plumber does this and be serious about it. It can be easier for them to make a bunch of cuts and connections on places like turns. It takes less planning todo it wrong. Don’t allow that. Like 99% of leaks are at connections, so the fewer you have the more unlikely a leak is to be.
Pex has been around for like 30 years it’s not as new as Americans make it. Neither is perfect.

My old place of business was built in mid 70s. Lots of copper under the slab. Over the course or 2 years we busted up slab in 4 spots. Each time it was holes in corroded copper fittings.

I've been snooping on a couple of high end Parade Homes being built next door.
No copper to be found.

I did pex. It is a path for water to flow. No reason to spend extra on metal. Put that in floors and cabinet's.

I've had both. Pex, hands down.

Only con to PEX is that rodents are attracted to it and have been known to know holes in it.
Also takes a couple special tools to make repairs.

Of course not, copper is more expensive and tends to get stolen.

Used it in my guest house build. PEX fittings are the real cost of using it. Nothing cheap about them.
Anybody know were I can buy 1200' of 1" PEX at a god price?
