What is the smallest center console/outboard combo you would feel comfortable taking offshore for day trips?

What are you defining as offshore?

5 miles or 50?

What kind of seas?

I've been out in 18' & 20'cc and also in 65 ft sport fishers when it's too rough to fish

26ish ft is probably the smallest I would go if using it regularly for going offshore, something with twin outboards. That being said I've been 15 miles out in a 21ft bay boat on a flat calm day, it's just not really ideal.

You gonna need some fish box space anyway.

Seas determine that more that anything else.

In good seas a 24’ with twins would be ok for 50miles or so.

ETA: with good electronics.

I have seen 17’ aluminum bass boats 10 miles out of Venice before.

Iv been 20miles out in a 21ft Reno. That being said I would want a 26ft catamaran with twin motors and independent fuel systems. Maybe a epirb and a subscription to sea-tow to be completely comfortable now.

I was 30 miles out in a 22 ft CC and watched seatow ride by pulling a 16ft Jon boat from beyond the horizon with a couple of scared kids!

I have a 22’ but there are so many factors involved that make it “safe” for each person. Every year, there is always one that goes down thinking they could take their small boat out in rough water.

I've done it a few times in a 24'.

How the weather is, how the boats built, and who's the captain all play majorly into this. I wouldnt have a problem going in my 18' boat on a good day, but I wouldnt want to ever go in my buddies 22 foot aluminum boat.

Is this true? I was chatting with buddies about how everybody always calls people taking a bay boat offshore an idiot. Yet you never hear of one going down.

I do day trips fairly often in a 25ft Shamrock with a single inboard. We have limped in a few times, so now everything on the boat is new with several spare parts on board as well.

But if it were my money, I'd get something like this if on a budget.

LINK to THT

it would be a good snapper go getter for a cheap price

That's a good deal.

Theres good safe options out there for somebody looking to get into the offshore game for a reasonable price.

Give me some good options. I’m currently looking at an ‘04 Ocean Master Hauptner Craft, 26’ with twin Yamaha 150 HPDI’s. Talk me out of it

We had a 22ft with a single 200 that we took about 30 miles out of fourchon. That was on a totally flat calm day though.

I think 24 is the minimum I would want to do it regularly. More importantly I would want/need two engines.

26 ft glacier bay is hard to beat for the price you can find them at. They are slow as shite, but tanks

I’m not saying people in bay boats are idiots. We do it plenty of times. But there are plenty that push their luck in small boats with iffy weather. Look at that guy in the bass boat out of Venice last year.

We go out in a 22' cat. But we stick to calmer days. Anything forecasting 3 or more we stay home.
