I own some land with some duck ponds and one of our guys disked up some land and put out some wheat for doves. The wheat field borders a neighbors land that was leased to some guys that planted a sunflower stand and they had tons of doves while we only shot a few.

The guys leasing the land were upset that we had planted our wheat field so close to them and were mooching off their hard work. I haven’t dove hunted in years but went up late yesterday afternoon and was confronted by the lease holder. I asked him to talk with the guys who planted our wheat field and it wasn’t pleasant.

I actually see their point to some degree but not sure what the proper etiquette is for something like this. Since I am the owner I need to take responsibility and make sure we do the right thing here even if our guys might have messed up.

What is the opinion of the OB on proper etiquette for a situation like this?

Tough shite. Tell him doves are a migratory species and he shouldn’t have planted the sunflowers so close to the property line.

It’s your land, you plant and hunt however you desire.

I’d ask to exchange contact info. so next year we avoid this mess by all getting on the same page.

So, some guy, who leases land near land you own, presumes to tell you how to manage your land? Now, I get why he wouldn’t be happy, but the better approach would have been for him to make an effort to coordinate shoots.

I agree with the others, your land do whAt you want. Were they hunting the field opening weekend only or multiple times during the season?

I was sort of blindsided by him being as mad as was as I didn’t see a big issue but after thinking about it I guess it would be like someone next Door to my duck Ponds shooting ducks climb in to feed. While there is nothing I can do, I might be perturbed.

How do y’all feel about someone setting up a shoot house on the property line for deer hunting?

frick them. They’re hunting near YOUR land. They’re taking YOUR doves.

Goes both ways.

And then this:

This may have been their angle all along. But they came at yOu wrong to try to claim better dates.

“You offended us, can we talk about dates that we hunt and you don’t?”

Why did they decide to plant next to your property? Did they have other options?

Usually the more guns the better on opening day, keeps the birds flying

You mean he planted wheat for cows

Right?

Cough cough

They may be worried that they are hunting near a baited field and can be ticketed

Safety would be my only concern. Maybe coordinate to not shoot in each other’s directions but you should be able to do whatever you want on your land.

What a bunch of bitches. You lease land, not birds. It’s your job to make your field as attractive as possible.

This. We always wanted the neighbors to hunt to keep the birds in the air.

This has pissed me off in the pass. Had to just tell the a-hole neighbor if he shoots across the line and comes across, he was going to jail. Had problems with this same a-hole running dogs on my place a few times in the pass. Had set up cameras and had let him know I did. He moved the stand after that cause he knew I wasn't playing games.

OP. it's your place, screw the other people due to being a a-hole up front. Tell him to pound sand now.

If you don’t shoot low birds this won’t be an issue.

Host a large OB dove hunt at your place.

I’d call the neighbor that owns the land and tell him he is leading to some jerks. Then I’d forget about it.
