So I have gotten by for a while keeping my guns on the high shelves in my closet/out of sight, but my parents are remodeling their house and my dad has dumped all of his guns off at my place as well. Need to pull the trigger on a safe but have never spent much time looking at them. Don't think I need one that holds more than 20 long guns (I only have 16 including my dads stuff, and 7 that are just mine.) Not necessarily looking for it to be ultra fire proof and villain proof, more so just want to have everything stored in a safe place that normal people cant get into.

Any brand recommendations, as well as how to go about getting a good deal on one are welcome. TIA

Most of the gun safes you see for sale are more flash than substance. What looks like thick metal is actually just sheet metal folded over sheetrock. This is true for Liberty, Browning, etc. I visited Cabelas recently and was able to flex the jam on one of their ‘good’ safes using only my hand.

The safe website below is a wealth of information, and I highly recommend reading through it.

Never buy one with a key pad. Know of two people that had to drill to open them. Know the old saying, shite happens.

Just a FYI, but the capacity of a gun safe is for guns without scopes. If you have 16 scoped rifles they will not fit in a 20 gun safe. I'm assuming not all of the guns are scoped rifles, but still.

Yep. If you have 20 long guns you’re going to need much bigger than a 20 gun safe. Plus that leaves you space for important documents and ammo.

Shotguns with long barrels have limited space in some safes as well not to mention that if you fill the safe to max capacity half of your guns are stuck behind the other half and you may have to empty the safe to get to the gun you want.
I'm sometimes reminded of this game when trying to get a gun from the back.

Cannon earned me as a customer for life after dealing with the lifetime warranty customer service after the flood. They not only sent me a brand new safe at zero charge, they upgraded me because mine was no longer available.

I have a Liberty safe and it's solid. Not the cheapest but I don't regret it. Count your guns with scopes and ARs/AKs as 2 when sizing.

If you’re looking for no fire protection or villain proof, get the cheapest thing you can get your hands on.

Tractor Supply has some safes for cheap and decent quality. Wait for their Christmas or other sales where they are dirt cheap.

I got a Liberty because I wanted good fire protection and villain proof for a decent price.

If you’re in BR, try Mike Wards and find their scratch and dent safes.

+1. I bought a liberty safe that was a "scratch and dent" that supposedly had a slight scratch on the top of the door. I have yet to see it but The discount was huge. Mike ward's was great to deal with and highly recommend a a top there.

All good information, so far.

When it comes to safes, they are similar to buying a home air conditioner. There are truly only 3-4 compressor manufactures made, and all A/C companies buy from those 3-4.

Same can be said for Safe Companies. There are about 3 manufactures and they slap a label on it for whichever brand you buy. Fire rating (time/temp)is what you're going for. I agree whole-heartedly on the fact of not purchasing one with a digital keypad. I have read too many stories about them having issues for me to be willing to purchase one. Also decide what size you need, and go one size larger. You will fill it up, no matter what. In addition to all my guns I have important documents (will, birth certificates, pass-ports, etc.) not to mention cash.

For the money Cannon makes a decent safe, that has an amazing warranty. If it ever burns in a fire, they will replace it for free. I know of someone that, unfortunately, had this happen and received a new safe. It has been 15+ years since I did all my digging/research and I'm sure that some things have changed, but at the time Liberty and Fort Knox were 2 brands that made their own safes and were considered the cream of the crop.

Whatever you end up with, bolt it to the ground or wall.

Did this last month. They really are great to deal with.

Don’t know if it’s been said, but buy a bigger safe than you think you need. I had space limitations that restricted the size safe I could get. Wish I coulda got a bigger one but it is what it is.

Got an 80 gun Cannon from tractor supply on Black Friday and had Mike Ward's come and bolt it down for me. They weren't there 15 minutes and it cost $125 but it was done quickly and done properly. All in cost under $1000 for a safe that I won't have the means to fill for many years.

Got a 64 gun cannon at academy when they were on sale for 599.

It only holds about 20 long guns and ammo.

Have one made. Several places in the state that do it. These box store safes are all bells and whistles and no real protection from fire or theft. Thin bent metal around fire proof rock. Digital key pads that go black or spin dials that a 6 year old can figure the combo drops. Not to mention a teenager with a 3ft crow bar can pry open in under a minute. Don't believe me, you tube it. They are not but one step better than an ole cedar gun cabinet with a glass door.

I see a couple of us are in the same boat with the Liberty. Got mine last month and couldn't be happier with it.

I've had a Liberty safe for about 8 years. Great safe, and it's made in the USA.

They had a good rebate offer so I got the Colonial 50. It's a little bigger than a double door refrigerator.

You can change the sides up so both sides hold long guns as well.

I was thinking about welding one up for my hidden storage compartment in my house, and they putting documents in a fire-rated box inside. Couldn't figure out how to reliably put a lock on it though. Jamming a 2" thick safe in there would take up too much space
