I use Springfield xds 9 with extended grip for more rounds. I like having the trigger safety along with the GRIP safety ! And I tried shooting it at the range many different ways and you always have the grip safety pressed when shooting.
Also like federal HST rounds for self defense.
Seen alot of ppl love the hellcat on here also.
Would be curious to hear the base of what happened if you ever decide to share one day.

Everyone is different. Bring her to Jim's or Cabellas and let her hold them and see what feels best in her hand. Springfield, Smith & Wesson, Sig, Canik, all make amazing pistols and will all get the job done, let her find out what will work for her.

I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum with my opinion on women and handguns.
If she is planning on carrying the gun in here purse and she can hold the gun comfortably, then a mid-size or full size is the best bet.
Glock 19, 17, 19x, 45
H&K VP9
SIG p320
Start with those and go from there.
They will be easier to shoot and lower felt recoil.

I gave each of my girls a Ruger 9mm 5 shot revolver. Easy to handle, just point and shoot. I also sent them to classes with a professional instructor

Smith Shield plus.
Immensely reliable. 10 rnd magazine for carry. 13 rnd magazine for home protection. It's a little bigger and a little heavier than a P365, which makes it less snappy with better recoil management.
Also, you can get them with a safety, which I think is important.

You can get the same yellow taser that most law officers carry. You can get one a little tamed down.
All at Homesecuritysuperstore.com
You can get a 3 oz can of Fox 5.3, or Freeze + p, both i guarantee you that Any of the red down arrow checking mo fo's here would not be able to fight back.
I know. I was sprayed with the Freeze + p in training, and later experienced the Fox. Any of the above be sure to get in STREAM, not cone. The cone has no distance to it's discharge. These two are Not your so called Mace, like Ace hardware key chain toys. These are the real deal.
The guns, there are plenty replies that will guide you. Just reality, how situational aware is she. How easy would a perp disarm her? Will she be trained in weapon retention ?
I'm not anti gun by no means, but you have to consider all factors. If suddenly confronted by a perp who walked up to her in the parking lot, would she have the ice in veins calmness to quickly process what is going on, and react tactically, or shake and be hit with an adrenline release. Just things to consider.
I haven't finished this thread yet but with the exception of the taser idea, this is probably the best post here.
Sometimes we're all a little to quick to jump to the gun. That's not always the best solution.

Biggest gun she is willing to carry. 2 things of note, revolvers are dumb for primary self defense. Also, off body carry is a very bad idea. If she wants to carry, she should get a holster and keep the gun on her person. Carrying in a purse is a very bad idea. I can elaborate why if you would like to hear it but it comes down to 3 factors, purse snatchings are extremely violent, carrying off body doesnt allow for a predictable setup for a draw, and anything off body has a chance of getting away from you.

Go to range and shoot:
Glock 19
S&W shield
HK VP9SK
I have all three. I’d get a first time owner and shooter who intends to carry a performance center edition shield 2.0. It’s a great gun, reliable, easy to strip and clean, and the slide isn’t hard at all to operate.
But there’s no substitute for the gun you’re comfortable with and practice with. Let her shoot a few at the range before you buy anything.
Buying a gun too small because she wants to conceal it but she’ll never practice with it is of no help to anyone.

S&W 642 airweight loaded with 148 grain wad cutters. Goes bang 5 times before reloading and the wad cutters will reach vitals regardless of amount of clothing the crackhead is wearing.

Great example of why you should shoot before you buy. Especially if you’re new to guns. As much as I love my 642, my wife hates it. I thought she’d like it but The DA trigger pull and recoil is just too much for her to the point where she won’t touch it anymore.
Buy something she’s comfortable with.

Check out the gun ranges in your area. Most have discount rentals for ladies to try out and some even have a ladies program. She can then find what she's comfortable with. There are some good suggestions here but ultimately it's what she's comfortable with. If she isn't comfortable with it, she's likely to either not use it or not use it correctly.
It doesn't look like you're in the area but as an example, FRC in baton rouge has Ladies Night where range time is half price, free rentals for ladies to try out, and a staff of female instructors to give hands on instruction. Really good way to get started.
Once she has the gun of HER choice, if she isn't old enough for a permit, many concealed classes allow under 21 to take the first half day of the class which is the pistol course. Most allow this for free or at a discount.
Again, the gun range should be able to point you in that direction.
Best of luck to you both.
