Not a dog guy. But this appeared on the farm late last night and still hanging around today.

Runs and tracks like he's been trained and obeys "no" commands. He's also chasing my livestock so I want to know what he is.

Has some markings like a Catahoula hound so I'm guessing a Catahoula mix.

Looks like a Sam. I’d call him Sam.

Already said but 100% has some Catahoula Cur in him. La State dog and hail from Catahoula Parish. That is a keeper, great farm dogs.

Edit: broad head sort of gives a Labrador vibe too. Very interesting coat. give Sam some food.

Based on coat color genetics, I'm thinking German Shepherd/Catahoula mix. The dog is a black-based merle with a saddle tan pattern.
Merle clearly comes from Catahoula on this guy. The saddle pattern is a specific modifier (RALY) on the A locus. Some info from Embark here: LINK Think traditional German Shepherd, Beagle, or some coonhounds. Not found in labs.
The merle gene affects the area that would be black, giving you this unique pattern. That slightly fluffy tail I see sticking out again makes me think GSD rather than the short haired breeds like coonhound.

Already fed him. He was literally standing Century at my back door tonight.

He also stopped chasing my horses as soon as got in to him a few times. Seems like a good dog. If he hangs arond a couple more days, I'm definetly keeping him.

Neighborhood dogs though may be a problem. He could join their little pack at any time. They alswys come on my land. At night.

Keep feeding him and he'll stick around. Especially if you have something to do with him.

Hes got a real hound dog howl to his bark. From what other have posted and the little research I've done today, I'd say hes probably some kind of Catahoula-Hound-Lab mix.

He's a natural runner. Long smooth gallop-like strides when he gets going. Tail points up, stops in his Tracks and has even pointed a few times. Got hunting dog written all over him.

One of the best dogs I ever had was a random stray that I fed. Loyal as all hell.
