Love me some Fisk maps. They make for beautiful wall art if you’re into that sort of thing.

By WAFB Staff | May 30, 2019 at 3:50 PM CDT - Updated May 30 at 3:50 PM MORGANZA, La. (WAFB) - The opening of the Morganza Control Structure, originally scheduled for Sunday, June 2, has been postponed until June 6. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to open the Morganza Floodway because forecasts indicate river elevations could overtop the control structure. There will be a “slow opening” process to limit water accumulation in the floodway, officials say. The planned opening is just the third in history. The last was in 2011. The opening of the Morganza Control Structure will divert water from the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya.

I’m seriously doubting the Atchafalaya has a 45 ft channel all the way up to Morganza or even half that way.

You'd be surprised at the depth of that river. But I assume the upper reaches would add 10'-15' of depth pretty rapidly in a failure event.

I just looked it up and the lower portion is maintained at 12ft by the Corp of engineers. Would take one hell of a dredging operation to get it to 40+ft.

And I’m sure it would have to be widened to keep up with current ship traffic.

That’s where the problem would be for a while. Once you hit the bird foot delta it starts getting shallow. And as I mentioned before, you have to go over 20 miles past Eugene island before you hit 40’ of water.

Just think of the massive delta that would be created into the ship shoal and engine island blocks over time. Would be hell for ship traffic but fishing and duck hunting would be off the charts

If I remember correctly the mouth of the AR has always been maintained at a 16' depth to allow for ship traffic to reach morgan city and berwick

12' isnt quite deep enough

Morganza Spillway

I live in East Texas but am going to New Orleans on Thursday June 6 via US 190. Am I going to be OK or will the river gods be sending torrents of water just like a new Mississippi River down through the Atchafalaya? Will there be six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline? I'm scared.
