Montana man - 6 months prison for cloning giant sheep and breeding it for hunting

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — An 81-year-old Montana man was sentenced Monday to six months in federal prison for illegally using tissue and testicles from large sheep hunted in Central Asia and the U.S. to create hybrid sheep for captive trophy hunting in Texas and Minnesota.
U.S. District Court Judge Brian Morris said he struggled to come up with a sentence for Arthur “Jack” Schubarth of Vaughn, Montana. He said he weighed Schubarth’s age and lack of a criminal record with a sentence that would deter anyone else from trying to “change the genetic makeup of the creatures” on the earth.
Morris also fined Schubarth $20,000 and ordered him to make a $4,000 payment to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Schubarth will be allowed to self-report to a Bureau of Prisons medical facility.
“I will have to work the rest of my life to repair everything I’ve done,” Schubarth told the judge just before sentencing.

According to the Department of Justice, the scheme started in 2013 and continued until 2021 at Schubarth's ranch in Montana, the Sun River Enterprises LLC.
He started buying sperm from the endangered Central Asian Marco Polo Argali sheep and illegally importing it into the United States without declaring it.
Marco Polo Argali are the world's biggest sheep and an adult male can weigh more than 300 pounds with horns spanning over five feet, making them highly prized among hunters.
Sheep vary in size and weight depending on their breed, but it is rare for them to weigh over 300 pounds.
Schubarth sent the sperm to a lab to create cloned embryos which he implanted into his ewes to bring forth a 'single, pure genetic male Margo Polo argali' that he named the 'Montana Mountain King,' or the MMK.
He then used MMK's sperm to impregnate other ewes, creating more hybrids, all of which were banned in the state.
He sold the offspring to hunting lodges in Texas - sometimes fetching up to $10,000 a sheep - and also sold MMK's sperm to other sheep breeders in the state.
He also illegally paid $400 to a hunter to buy testicles from Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep to extract sperm for cross-breeding.
His goal was to create a 'larger and more valuable species of sheep' to sell to shooting ranches in Texas.
To move the banned sheep in and out of the state, he forged vet inspection certificates, claiming they were a legal breed.
When authorities discovered the scheme, they removed MMK.

That is some creative effort there.

One of my customer's is currently building a lab that a company is going to try to recreate the woolly mammoth and saber tooth tiger with some DNA that was recovered and cross bred with i believe an indian elephant and a siberian tiger. I don't see why what he did was any more illegal than that.

I mean the article lists a ton of illegal and deceptive shite he did to accomplish this. It’d be like if your client said they were trying to recreate wooly mammoth / Sabertooth tigers but were really just breeding elephants and tigers for illegal sale.

Schubarth pleaded guilty in March to charges that he and five other people conspired to use tissue from a Marco Polo sheep illegally brought into the U.S. to clone that animal and then use the clone and its descendants to create a larger, hybrid species of sheep that would be more valuable for captive hunting operations.
Marco Polo sheep are the largest in the world, can weigh 300 pounds (136 kilograms) and have curled horns up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, court records said.
Schubarth sold semen from MMK along with hybrid sheep to three people in Texas, while a Minnesota resident brought 74 sheep to Schubarth’s ranch for them to be inseminated at various times during the conspiracy, court records said. Schubarth sold one direct offspring from MMK for $10,000 and other sheep with lesser MMK genetics for smaller amounts.

I think we all agree he broke laws.
The question is…do any of us care that he broke those laws? Old dude was breeding sheep for hunting lodges.

Did they get the DNA out of Amber?

Only the govt can do shite like this and get away with it. That's his problem, he didn't involve them.

This is cool. I think. But also... Why? What is the reason, other than its a neat idea?

Because he didn’t get the king to bless it before he did it. Not that they would have without The proper fees being collected.
And for the record, I don’t think anybody, including the government should be cloning or interbreeding anything

I’ve got a problem with the entire high fence industry.

Because some people can afford to go to Mongolia and spend upwards of $100,000 to hunt an Argali Sheep. $10,000 is a bargain.

Where he ran into problems is he forgot 10% to the big guy

Yet the people who engineered a deadly virus in a lab that killed millions and shut down the world remain unpunished.

I've seen what people breeding snakes for other snake enthusiasts has done to the southern portion of my state.

I don't remember why... But I swear the first reintroduced mammoths were born a few months ago.
