Mississippi resident hunting license question
Posted on 10/4/22 at 8:46 am

So we live in Louisiana but we own 90 huntable acres in Mississippi. Land is in dads name, physical address, power, etc. However his drivers license is his LA license. Would this make him a non resident or resident? According to the law, if the land title is in our name we do not need to purchase hunting licenses every year for Residents. Can anyone shed some light on this please
quote:
Resident: Each resident of Mississippi ages sixteen (16) through sixty-four (64), must obtain a hunting license, except while hunting on lands titled in his/her name. Any person sixty-five (65) or older, or any person otherwise exempt from obtaining a hunting license, must have documentation with him/her at all times while hunting as described in “License Exemptions” [MS. Code 49-7-5].

On the MDWFP site under license, it says you must “domicile” in the state and have a ms driver license. I considered changing everything to ms. As we own land there and spend a lot of time there. But the tax’s on vehicles etc was more than non resident license, so I just pay the bill

I’m not seeing where it said we must domicile in the state
Scratch that I found it

The portion you posted only applies to residents of MS. If you get a drivers license there then I think you’d be able to get away with it, although you’d be limited to just your land.

You have to have miss license period. Just owning a place doesn't qualify

This is two different topics.
1. To qualify for resident license you must domicile in Mississippi.
2. To no have a license at all, your name must be on the deed. If just your dad is on the deed then you need a license, whether that’s resident or non-resident

This is spot on. Must be domiciled there, have a drivers license and only who actually owns the property, in your case your dad would not require a hunting license. If you’re not on the deed you will need a hunting license.

The great state of Mississippi appreciates those fees.

LIKE STATED: IF YOUR NAME ISN'T ON LAND DEED; YOU NEED A LICENSE. And in you case being a resident of LA; you gotta Pay the Man ($400 non rez).

yeah, and them increasing the deer permit and turkey permit to $50 each this year that you have to have in addition to the all game license is ridiculous
wish LA would put a "work permit" fee on every man from Mississippi that comes to work here

do they not have to pay our income tax?

So if I own the land I hunt on in MS but live in LA do I have to have a MS license? Land is titled in my name.

Correct. You must be a legal resident of Ms to qualify for the resident hunting license. It doesn’t matter if you own land here. If you are a resident of another state you just by the NR license.

if so, only at the same rate a resident does , unlike hunting license where non res has to pay 10x a resident

Don't get the down vote.
My cousin owns property and a home in Miss. Still has to get a non resident license. He had to have a missippi license to get a resident license. Don't see the confusion.

According to the MDWFP office, if you own the land and you live out of state, you must buy and out of state license.
If by chance both of your parents were born in MS you may be able to buy a lifetime license.
My son's out of state was around $425 for hunting our land.

That’s a new one to me. I do remember the native son lifetime license that you could buy if you were born here and moved away.

I had called and ask if I could buy son a lifetime license since my wife was born there and I grew up there.
The lady said since I was not born there I could not.
I have a MS lifetime license.
Another person may say something different. I don’t know.
