When Ford and GM were putting money into R&D for quality control, it seems Chrysler was only concerned with putting the biggest motor in the cheapest vehicle possible.

When accelerating you can hear a grinding sound, the truck loses forward power, and the engine revs. Then it catches and everything is fine. Happens more on uphill climbs.
I was told the gears have been ground down.
Others suggest that I melted the gears by getting the tranny too hot. How hot is too hot?
Should I add an aftermarket tranny cooler with the new tranny?

This and now that Fiat bought them all they do is deny warranties
To the OP, do you monitor your trans temp while towing or not? Heat is probably what killed it, but could be other things. Do you know how hot you run?

tranny temp is on the gauge.
I have never seen it above 193.
I do not pull a load above the speed limit and I have never pulled anything really heavy with this truck.

So not this one?
But this one, right?

You should always have a tranny cooler on a truck. I even had one on a V6 Tacoma

Should only be there while towing, def add a cooler for in the future.
What gearing do you have?

my dad drove one of the first ones. he pulled the boat with it and occasionally had to pull someone off of the boatramp in the basin. the front wheel drive stayed on the gravel when all the trucks backed down in the mud.

My 02 dodge diesel tranny went out at 55k miles. Six months after I put in a super chip programmer

I know people with that same truck @ 100k miles on 3rd transmission

I would think the new tranny would be sufficient. especially if you go with a built ATS or suncoast tranny.
what programmer were you running with the EGR/DPF delete?
I've been running the EGR and DPF delete on my truck since 8,000 miles and Im currently at 107k. I run it with the Edge Juice with attitude stacked with an MP8. I have it calibrated for my 35" wheels. I have not had any engine or trans problems at all.(knock on freaking wood)

I had on '01 Dodge 4x4 Cummins with the 6 speed manual on 35"s. It was an absolute beast. No problem ever with engine or tranny. The A/C however, shite the bed multiple times, and was ultimately why I got rid of it.

Not a Dodge fan for this reason.

I read this thread on the way home and while driving, I heard the dreaded "bing" from my overhead computer.
turns out I'm low on washer fluid

If getting that hot was commonplace or even a possibility, it should have come with one.

Yea, should have got a Chevy. Pull shite that is prob to heavy and I have a pretty heavy foot. I am a little over 213K, running like a charm. Getting a new one this fall. I am planning on doing a good bit on mods to it as well but starting to get a little worried about doing that.

there's no available amount of washer fluid out there existing to mankind that can wipe the shite off of a dodge.
#dodge sucks

reaching those temps has a lot to do with how you drive it, terrain, how heavy you're towing, etc.
