We still make 5-6 runs each year but our lease is almost 11,000 acres. the dogs can run all afternoon and never leave our property.

We used to do a dog run the last week of the season on my best friends property. We would get all the neighbors together and make sure we had agreement if the dogs got off his 500 acre tract.

We had to make sure we had access routes on the neighbors property to cut the dogs off if they got off his place.

We had 2 dogs jump a buck that headed due south and ran in a straight line as fast as he could.

I remember riding the Atv at a crazy speed to cut the dogs off. They still out ran us to the property line.

I understand that it happens, but to run on other peoples property and not care is just freaking wrong!

Sooo, what's the feeling on shooting 3 random non collared dogs who have been on our property everyday pretty much all year long?

They are well fed and domestic breeds so not strays.

Our property borders their's on the east. We used to have problems with them many years ago for various-and-sundry reasons, but have had no issues with them in a long time. Are they still a club?

I have neighbors dogs who make loops through my place a few times per week, but they aren’t hunting dogs. They are dogs being dogs.

I’m way out in the country, so not much can be done about it.

I’m not shooting a dog unless it gets aggressive and tries to attack.

Id ask the owners to keep them away.

If they dont, Id pick them up and drive them to a shelter in texas.

Catch them and relocate . I wouldn’t kill them because their owners suck.
Now, if they get aggressive and try to hurt you that’s a different story.

I don't think thats necessarily right either. Some dogs need to be shot, like dogs harassing livestock or wild dogs.

You need to be a piece of shite to shoot someone's deer dogs before youve addressed the issue with the owners and also a piece of shite to have your deer dogs ransaking someone else's property. Both people are shitty in said scenario.

That said, it really is a shame that such a great form of hunting will soon be dead and gone. Man has hunted big game with dogs for a very very long time. Until recently, it was a given that in the south everyone who deer hunted would be doing so with dogs, and most neighbors got along and shot deer in front of each others dogs. Everybody felt that they had some part in the kill and it was a group effort with group reward. Now a days, somebody gets a few trail camera pictures of a buck and it's "their" deer that they are "hunting" by sitting around waiting on it to decide it wants corn in the daylight. They are often unhappy when someone else kills it. Gone are the big group pictures of everybody with the lucky hunter and his kill.

Deer hunting with dogs is such a pure form of hunting and I pity those who have never experienced it or been exposed to it when it's done right. I know you red dirt people have to deal with rednecks driving too fast down roads and shooting down highways and not respecting your property, and I get why that puts a bad taste in your mouth for the sport. We aren't all like that. We basically stopped running dogs when our neighbors did and our property started shrinking, and it started getting difficult. It takes a lot of land and/or cooperative neighbors to do it right.

I've killed my biggest buck out of a stand, but my fondest hunting memories are all of dog hunts. I think most people in my club would say the same thing. So many great memories of great men who are no longer with us. I am disappointed that my boy will likely never get to experience that.

Awefull enough to shoot dogs. But shooting poachers is murder. You wanna go to "pound you in the arse" prison over hunting?

might wanna look up the prestenbach case from jefferson parish in early 2000s.

funny story, I guy I know from NOLA bought a place in MS and his neighbors dog hunted, he got tired of the dogs coming on to his property, So he shot two and left em on the road. Well a few weeks later his TWO male labs ended up at the dog clubs pen as they had 2 or 3 females in heat penned up. As one of the club guys said, "Hoss we even now, but if you want we can keep playing this game".

Poisoning and shooting dogs is just plain wrong(not a deer dogger, but a bird dogger and 95% of the time I hunt my dogs without a collar - one time having to swim to untangle a dog that got her collar caught on a branch - will do that - as will spending 3 hours looking for a dog that was hung up by the collar on a piece of wire -) if someone shot one of my bird dogs I have no idea what I would do, but it would likely be well beyond eye for an eye and highly medevil.

now with modern technology and tracking collars, cell phones dog hunters need to do a better job at corralling them.

Hunting a friend of mines lease last year I found 3 deer dogs all had collars and phone numbers, they followed me and my bird dogs back to the truck - called the number, gave me a pin drop to their camp - dropped off dogs and when they realized i had bird dawgs we made a quick woodcock run - actually my best hour of hunting last year. oh and they sent me home with 2 backstraps - so it's a win.

people that are against hunters take posts like yours and use that is fuel to sway opines.

now feral cats.... hmmm

I agree with most of what you said. I don’t necessarily want to see the tradition die, but nor do I want to constantly be bothered by dogs and dog hunters on the property that I own.

Just an idea, but If dog season were moved to the last two weeks of January, less people would care.

As for as an aggressive dog goes, if room and situation allows, the first bullet is in the ground to scare him off, but the second is in him. No way I allow myself or a family member to be injured by a dog that’s on my property.

Never shot a dog myself, love them too much. But I will defend the right of someone to shoot them if dogs are trespassing, especially if owners have been warned.

Poachers are another matter. I am not a big fan of most humans in general, I treat them with respect and demand they do the same. If I had to shoot a poacher, I would have absolutely no problem. Unlike dogs, they know what they are doing. I'll take my chances with prison.

Like I said, I get it. Times change. I get my dog hunting fix in via tree dogs these days and my boy will hopefully still learn how to be a houndsman.

Nah. Ignorant rednecks just need to quit doing ignorant redneck shite with their dogs and trucks and we wouldn't have any problems.

I genuinely do feel bad for those who don't have those pictures of a whole bunch of family and friends at the camp with a dead buck. THAT is as good as deer hunting can be.

My problem is when the dog hunters release their dogs 200-300 yds from my property line to dog hunt 20 acres.
I get it and agree with you, there are shite heads that can ruin anything for everyone else. But I’m not a fan of additional regulation just because I disagree with how my neighbors do things. These deer will outlive us all so I do my best to minimize the bitching and enjoy “hunting” the way I like to do it.

Ain’t nothing wrong with those pens, man. Dogs are nice, too.
Couple things-
I would take a couple of hours and build them a nicer house ( those barrels aren’t that warm and inviting on a wet, cold, day), and you want those little guys to be rested and comfortable in between hunts.
I would also either get shorter water buckets or cut those down a little.
All in all that’s not a bad setup.
Nice pups, too.
