And getting worse.

Full blood British Labrador...

He's afraid of any noise but to a point where he runs and hides and visibly shakes. He's afraid of people getting near windows, coughs, music, anything. Do I need to get him some doggy CBD or something? We are tender with him and reassure him but he's just terrified. It's actually quite sad. Any advice on a way to get him past this?

OOHHH, that's a tough one. How old and where did you get him?

Give him something like hotdog pieces while you’re making a noise that would normally scare him.

Definitely a tough one. Like bbvd said, give him some good treats while making some loud noises and such. Try to help reaffirm that they aren’t bad. But once they get that fear in them, for some reason it’s almost stuck.

He's 5 and I got him from a friend that is a breeder/trainer. I've tried dog treats but he won't eat when he is scared.

Could it be anxiety related? Isn’t there anxiety meds for pets that can help with those types of behavior issues?

Some dogs crack under pressure. Then they are done. I'm assuming this is just a pet, if he is already 5. Not planning on hunting him?

You need to be on your knee next to him giving him treats and reassuring him and petting him BEFORE he gets the noises.

Also, take him outside and start the noise away from him like 50yds or more.
Give him a treat and fire a gun
Really reassure him

Let the gun get closer and give treat, pet on him and the fire again.

Repeat until you can get the gun closer to him.

My wife's dog is on trazadone. It wasn't a full fix but its helped a lot and isn't expensive. He was similar to your dog.

The "Breeder/Trainer" has palmed off a psychotic animal on you. No amount of effort, time or money will heal the psychosis. This animal will live a life of terror forever. Take it back to the "Breeder/Trainer" and if he cannot heal the animal in a month or so then it is best to put it down rather than force it to live a life of terror.

Never seen one afraid of a cough. Prolly a lil late to start but with all my pups I start them at 6wks with feeding them and slamming two books together 20-30 ft away while someone is sitting there petting them. I work up the sound (books, hammer, cap gun, 22rifle) depending on reaction each feeding until I can shoot a shotgun next to them.
Some dogs you can get to a shot gun in just a few feedings.

Try something better than standard treats, something they can’t resist like hot dogs as mentioned, peanut butter, etc. Similar to getting a pup started on being a gun dog like mentioned above with quieter sounds progressing up.

Get rid of him and get another one. Scared dogs bite people.

I had the exact same thing happen to mine. I kept taking him hunting and when he was 4, I was about to give up. Took a bunch of hot dogs and did not hunt with the guys, just kept feeding the dog treats and talked to him to distract him when the guys got up to shoot in the pit, all the while feeding him hot dogs. After 3 of those hunts he was a different animal. I feed him one before we hunt now and have backed off the constant treats. Just a few each hunt. Be patient and it’s possible!

This is a great outcome for a scared dog. Hopefully the OP can duplicate.

That trainer / breeder pulled the wool over OPs eyes. There is no way a trainer did not know that lab was gun shy / noise shy, whatever you want to call it.

It can definitely be trained out of the lab, but a 5 yr old may be tough in its ways.

Unfortunately, it should be corrected. I'd agree that a scared dog is dangerous and unpredictable. It's cruel to the dog, in my humble opinion.

My well trained gun dog hears fireworks and searches the house for a dead bird. Hopefully you can replicate with time!

Exactly same first thought that came to my mind when I saw a so-called "Breeder/Trainer" gave him the dog.

He didn't need, or want to deal with the hassle of a neurotic dog, so he dumped him on his "friend".

Don't know about you, but I sure don't need friends like that in my life.
