I've looked at the big stores online, but is there a better way to get a good deal. I'm just looking for something to take down an intruder. Doesn't have to be the best gun out there, just something dependable and I can count on. TIA!

If you're behind enemy lines in a 10 RD capacity state I would suggest a Glock 43X.

They don’t. They have a concealed carry permit.

OP, it’s honestly not going to be easy to find much but supplies are getting better. Try as many as you can before you choose.

Second the VP9 as mentioned above. Walther PPQ isn't bad and has a trigger to die for. I've personally had good luck on gunbroker, but I've had to shop for the deals. Just my .02

I think the Glock 19X and the 45 are two of the best pistols available, especially if you won't be carrying it much or at all.

How does that work? No range time during your class or you just borrow one?

I'd suggest a full size (e.g. NOT a compact or semi-compact) handgun in 9mm, 40 S&W, 357 Mag, 357 Sig or 45 ACP. All of these are similarly effective at stopping a fight, but I’d go w/ the 9mm. Full size guns are generally easier to shoot for a number of reasons. Since you’re not looking for a concealed carry gun, there's no reason to go small/compact. Full size (not "airweight or lightweight") revolvers are fine, but they're not foolproof and have limited round capacity. Most folks would get a double stack magazine semi-auto (e.g a Model 17 Glock, S&W M&P, Springfield Armory XD/XDM and MANY other models). Personally, I'd get a full size, double stack, double action only or a striker fired gun. The single action/double action semi-auto (like the Beretta Model 92) is very good also, but I personally prefer the simplicity of either DAO or SAO. Of course, for someone willing to learn it's manual of arms, a reliable 1911 is always a good choice. There's lots of good self defense ammo, but availability may be an issue. One way to simplify the choice of ammo is to consider using whatever handgun ammo your local LEO's use. Put a premium on getting a 100% RELIABLE gun from a reputable gun maker, i.e. Ruger, S&W, Beretta, Sig, Springfield Armory, Walther, etc. This is NOT where you want to save money.

Louisiana doesn't care. You can borrow one if need be, as long as you can hit the target, but you MUST hit the target during the class.

The range I took the class at let you borrow one if you didn't have your own. I think it was a Shield.

To OP, the best way to find a gun is to shoot a lot of them. Go to a range that rents guns and try them out until you find one you like because you WILL NOT like them all and it would suck to spend hundreds on something and then never take it out of its case because you can't stand shooting it. You want something you LIKE to practice with. Stick with the brands everyone knows and don't try to be cheap. Wait to be cheap and buy the off brand oddball on the second gun that's not going to be your "life is on the line" gun.

Same as a concealed carry permit. Not sure why it is called a pistol permit, but it is and that is what is printed on the ID card.

Alabama does not require classes or proficiency training to obtain a concealed carry permit. You apply at the local sheriffs department pay your fee, they run a background check and your good to go in a week or two if your record is clean.

Go to SRT off of Cody Rd. They normally have a great selection that you can try at their range. Staff has been helpful the few times I’ve been. 7078 Bruns Dr

I live in Alabama and About 10 years ago I ordered 2 Bowie knives online to be shipped to Alabama. When I checked out My order was flagged with a note that said Bowie Knives could not be shipped to Alabama. It is illegal to conceal a Bowie knife on your person in Alabama but okay to carry it openly.
Some weird Old Law was still on the bookS and may still be.

I love my Canik Elite SC 9mm. It’s small enough to carry but hefty enough to shoot well and use in the house. And smooth trigger.

Cost me about $385 at Academy.

But strictly for home, I’ve really been wanting this Walther. Just such a beautiful gun. Not cheap though.
