I wanted one at 15, but my dad wouldn't let me get one and I am glad he didn't. They are more dangerous pulling boats as well. I did buy one after college and loved it, but by then I was a much safer driver.

I would put a vote in for the most recent model JK unit you can find that checks all your boxes. Some of the earliest JK models had a couple problems, but that transmission on the newest ones are dynamite. the 3.6 pentastar is also very well made.

but do bear in mind... jeeps don't tow shite.

I just traded in a 2023 Mojave Gladiator. I loved it other than it was a steaming hunk of shite. Changed out all four shocks twice before reaching 25k miles. Had an oil leak and electrical gremlins pretty much from day one. Several small cosmetic things would just break. Stellantis ruined the Jeep brand with their nonexistent quality control. I love Jeeps but won't have another anytime soon.

Buy him a Toyota 2nd or 3rd Gen Tacoma. Put some B/F Goodrich AT K03's on iy and he will be driving well after his college days. Jeeps will be trouble from the get go.

I have an 05 rubicon unlimited, I love it. From what I’ve heard, the 4.0 i6 is a great engine, but 06 was the last year do to emission regs.

None of them. They all have more issues than most vehicles. Fun to own, fun to drive but they ain't ever been practical. I have had several over the years and always had a blast driving them and the damned things are amazing off the pavement but if you are looking for a vehicle that doesn't crave the attention of at least a shade tree mechanic no vehicle that ever work the Jeep brand will fit the bill in my experience.

That said if you are somewhat mechanically inclined pre 2000 or so Wranglers and CJs are pretty simple machines and would be a great opportunity for you and your son to share some quality time together with him learning some valuable life skills. No a bad trade off for high cost of ownership.

The cooling system is the source of problems with jeeps.

And historically horrendous braking systems. Worse than GM truck and SUV rear brakes....

The TJ year Models are what you’re looking for OP.
I have had several and never had and real problems. Sahara package if you can get it.
A fair warning….. they drink fuel. You can’t fit anything in them, don’t tow well, are noisy inside I had to wear earplugs to drive to Houston.
For a 16 year old man. It will be a blast .
I got a CJ-7 when I could drive. I will never forget it.
Go for it.

I have owned a dozen of them. My fave is the 2016 JK Sport. I consider them to be a safe vehicle for a teen. They are not drag race vehicles.

Exact same boat. Our oldest bought a car from grandparents, and the next kid wants nothing to do with anything similar. He wants a 1995-2005 Jeep, specifically wanted the Cherokee XJ with 4.0. We've looked at several and probably would have been fine, but I am having a hard time with his main vehicle being one that will require a lot of work.

He wants to work on it, which is fine. I grew up working on jeeps we used on the farm as tow-behinds, etc. My brother is a jeep expert and has a huge shop, so we have the tools, space, and knowledge.

I am leaning toward convincing him to get something reliable like a 2-door Tacoma that can be fun off-road, but maybe I just get a project jeep for us on my own dime. (He's saved $10k for his first ride).

My 2022 mojave has zero issues with 50k on it. And I mean zero things other than a deer running into the side of it like a retard

I have a 2022 gladiator Willy’s with 119,000 miles that I have had zero issues out of and treat like a SxS in the woods, I pull an 18ft mud boat and 21ft bay boat up to 5 hrs one way with it. I had a 2016 2 door rubicon that I used to take to to mud parks and was my daily driver never had an issue that wasn’t self inflicted. That jeep was $10-15k less than most of the SxS on the trail but had ac/heat and was street legal. My better half just parked her 2014 Sahara at 240,000 miles due to the engine started ticking, first issue it has had.

My wife’s 22 Wrangler with 70k has been in the shop for 2.5 months with transmission issues. The shop has 3 of them currently doing the same thing. Jeep says change the TCM but it’s not a fix . Once repaired, we are getting rid of it. She loves it but wants something she can have confidence in and that’s not it.

None. The only thing going for them is they are relatively easy to fix when they repeatedly break.

I had a 2014 (JK) and i liked it. I pulled my bass boat around town with it no issues. Only kept it for a year though because kid number two was on the way and I already had one in an infant car seat. Just not enough room for two. Hopefully he will not have that problem any time soon though.

Many years ago a friend of my oldest son rolled his CJ on the old Mandeville lake front.

A miracle that he walked away !!!

We still have a 81 CJ-7 we did frame off restoration on 15 plus years ago.

Fun but no safety features other than a seat belt and a roll bar.

I'd hate to give a new driver one of these, they can get squirrelly due to suspension, steering components, larger tires or lift kits.

A buddy of mine had one when we were young, it was cool to take the top off but hard to keep on the road.

Get him an older lifted Tacoma
