Issue with Honda 300 Fourtrax
Posted on 1/12/21 at 5:01 pm

Just started up my 1993 Honda 300 Fourtrax and feels like the brake is sticking. When I push the throttle I feel some resistance in both forward and reverse and I can tell that my left hand brake is tighter than usual. Right side brake doesn’t work and foot brake feels normal.
Not the most mechanically inclined but doesn’t anybody know a quick fox to this without having to take everything apart. I planned to hunt tomorrow and don’t have time for this type of project before. Any help is appreciated.

Where are you? Could it have ice in it?
Used to ride Bayou 220's in the woods, it was wet. In cold weather the water in the brakes would freeze and lock up the front wheels.

Brake shoes are probably seized against the drums. Try spraying some lubricant up in there if you can

Will give that a shot.
Would disconnecting the hand brake wire do anything?

Unlikely. Pull the drain plug on the drum.
If rusty water comes out, rebuild them, adjust properly, then fill the drum with grease.

Just cut the brake cords and downshift like a mad man to slow down.
I haven't used the brakes on a Honda 300 in 25 years. Hell, even when the damn thing had brakes, they were gone after 3 rides.
It's a tank. Treat it as such.

^^^This. I'v never seen a 300 fourtrax with working brakes. Downshifting works great, taught my kids how to ride that way.

Common with Honda 4 wheeler. If you ride through any I’d or water on a regular basis. As stated above try breaking it loose with penetrating oil. Back off on the wing nuts that tighten the brake cable. If that don’t work, then there is a brake rebuild in your future. Good news is, it ain’t hard. Good luck

I’ve seen an arctic cat 1000 with all the bells and whistles get stuck in a drained bayou and overheated and my friend on a fourtrax 300 with stock tires did donuts around him in the same mudhole

When you get the time, convert the front brakes to disc and get rid of the rear brake.
On my 300, I converted the rear end to a closed axle Foreman from the 80s and stuck a disc brake conversion on that axle as well. I still need to dial the rear brake in but the front brakes are more than enough.
TLDR drum brakes suck

So where do you hunt above I10?

On the rear brakes its usually part #7 in the diagram that seizes (brake cam) and causes a problem. To check it pump the rear brake pedal up and down and watch to see if it is moving freely. If not take the brakes apart and lube that cam where it makes contact with the housing and brake pads.

+1 for switching to disk brakes up front. Very easy To swap and more than enough stopping. Especially if you are use to no brakes lol

The drum brakes in the rear and front are great if you can stop the water intrusion.
The biggest issue with those bikes are the rear ends going out from water coming through the drum in the rear into the axle tube and then into the differential.
The earlier Honda rear ends did not have this issue because they were full of grease from the factory.
