Everybody laugh at me now.

What I’m looking for is a boat for me and my elderly Dad to use to just ride around the bayou and pretend to fish.

I want an aluminum boat with a reliable motor. Steering wheel would be nice if we can swing that.

I have not paid attention to boats in twenty years. The local place sells Xpress. Is that the sort of thing you would be looking for in my situation?

Is the boat market similar to the used/new car market now, where used cars seem to be almost as much as new?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

pretty much, new boats are sold before they arrive at the dealer and used boats are selling like hotcakes.

I liked dealing with Greenwell Springs Marine. Not sure if that is local for you. Cheap, Sheeeeeeettttt everything about a boat is expensive.

Figures

Seems like I remember the basic bayou boat is 14’ with a 25 hp motor. Is that still the case?

What does that mean to you? $5k? $10K? More?

12-15k is the lowest I was expecting to see for anything reliable.

For that price get a used (10 year old) Xpress 18’ center console and call it a day. Will be quite happy in your situation with that boat.

You can find that, I would think.

Not a huge fan of tracker but the Xpress boats will cost a bit more new. I would also say that I would try to go with a Yamaha if I could get that, they seem pretty bulletproof. I do like mine. But I have a bat boat.

What area will you be fishing?

You should have options in that price range. Do you prefer to stand or sit while riding/driving the boat?

I've been perusing the classifieds on LA Sportsman lately and I can tell you there are plenty of options out there in your price range.

An older Xpress boat with a Yamaha motor would be a good choice. That’s IF you can find one. I did just buy a 17/54 tracker grizzly to leave in my pond. It was about 6k brand new. I just added a trolling motor to it, and it seems to be a solid boat. Adding a smaller used outboard to it would make a good little setup for fishing in smaller waters. Again, the problem is just finding anything in stock. Had to buy this on in Illinois, and have it shipped to me.

I would search the private classifieds, you can get some good deals on nice boats. Id look at some of the panfish series boats, that is what I am going to get when I get tired of jumping up and down off the front deck, and your dad may appreciate it.

I sold a pontoon boat in 4 hours last weekend after listing it on facebook for $1500 more than I paid for it 5 years ago.

Had just under 60 messages asking about it before it sold. I wish I had a yard full of them to sell.

Depending on how elderly we are talking I remember many years ago fishing out of my brothers 16 or 17 tracker and how unstable that skinny thing was getting in and out of it. My dad fishes with us on dang near every trip and I wouldn't want him climbing in and out of that unstable boat, he is 72 and not feeble at all. I would try to up my budget another 10K if possible and get a smaller bay boat.
