Looking for recommendations for a new charcoal pit/smoker. Most of what I’m finding around Baton Rouge is thin sheet metal construction. One of the better ones I found was Oklahoma Joe and I still thought for the money it was pretty thin..

Anyone know of someone who makes thick bbq pits or a commercial pit with thick walls?

I’ve been looking as well. The oklahoma joes that I’ve seen at Lowe’s are reasonably priced around 300-400 compared to the absolute crap that is selling for 200. There’s an “over/under” design at academy that I saw the other day, fairly thick, either the same as Oklahoma joes or a little thicker. I think in the 5-600 range but don’t quote me on that. From there the price seems to skyrocket. I’m looking for an offset vertical smoker and will probably end up with the one Oklahoma joe has for about 350. I just can’t justify spending more on a smoker for the weekends. Check out the over/under (might be up/over) ones at academy. You might like them.

The old country pits at academy get good reviews. The only thing that I’ve read is that they aren’t sealed up. That can be cured with nomex gaskets.

Like you said, most places sell that stamped
Metal crap. They don’t retain heat and they’ll rust out in 5 years. Find you a laid off plant baw and get him to weld you one with some heavy duty pipe. Buy once, cry once

Academy Oklahoma Joe

I caught this on sale for $299. It's been pretty damn good, so far.

I had a guy in Lafayette lined up to build one, but he was stupid expensive.

Most of the mass produced ones youre going to find at the big box stores are going to be thin sheet metal. Same with Old Country pits (what I have). There are mods you can make to account for this and still turn out great bbq. If you are looking for top quality construction, I'd suggest Lone Star Grillz out of Texas. They make great stuff and not a terrible price, depending on the size and features added. Good Luck!

I use those throw away aluminum turkey roasting pans under the burners, and in the charcoal side to build the fire in, placed on top of a piece of expanded metal I have cut out. They last a lot longer just by doing that.

For real smoking, I have a 42" MasterBilt electric...…"set it, and forget it..."

TheGoodOne-OpenRange

This is what I have. The firebox can be used as a normal grill set up and of course there is a smoke chamber. I’ve done a 15lb packer brisket and 2 7lb butts at the same time in the smoke box.

It’s a heavy duty pit and has a much smaller foot print compared to traditional offsets. It’s right around 1k online. They make a smaller version for less as well.

All of the grills and ash “catcher” are removable and are made of heavy duty steel grates. A load of lump and some oak splits will go for about 4.5-5 hrs if you don’t mess with it. Which is great when you are putting a brisket on at 2-3 am.

My buddy is selling a homeade one. Let me know if you are interested. It's pretty big. I guess 5-6ft long with a 6-7ft smoker on 1 side. needs just a little patching on the bottom of the pit.

This is exactly why I went ceramic (BGE). My 36" pipe charcoal pit is starting to rust through and I don't have a welder close to patch it affordably...yet. Schedule 20 pipe is a good thickness to battle rust through the years (mine's lasted over 35 years).

I had built one a charcoal/wood burning smoker years ago and it was a great cooker but heavy as we used 1/4” steel. If you go that route, having one custom made is the way to go if you want it to last due to the thickness of metal vs what you will find in the box stores. However, in recent years we have used the big green egg and a Memphis wood fire (pellet) grill. We use these on a weekly basis due to the ease of starting and maintaining temps whereas the charcoal smoker was only for special occasions.

Check out the Old Country Brazos at Academy. It has some pretty decent thickness on the steel. You'll need to do some sealing work eventually but for your budget, its a damn good starting point.

I have both of these and are very heavy in weight and wall thickness. You can get a small one close to your price range. My klose is for a crowd and the gator pit is for small groups.

Look at the good one... it’s an odd looking dude, but it’s the real deal.

And good luck.

Check craigslist and maybe Facebook marketplace for a good used unit. I was prepared to pay 1k for something nice and picked up a Lyfe Time used for about $400. You may even find a reverse flow unit for a decent price if ya get lucky.
