Ctown – I have used hypersonic BBs on geese and I like it almost as much as hevi metal. Hevimetal looks like welding slag but out to 50 yds its deadly.

I agree w/ most that the best all round value is kent fast steel. I used to shoot estate fast steel as well (10+ yrs ago) – anyone use it? I liked it then but I think other brands have caught up

Ohh and 3" for me ... I don't make enough $ to shoot 3.5s ......

I shoot Hevi Steel, Kent, and Federals. I've noticed the hevi steel is a little LESS waterproof than the others but still a very good shell. Out of the 4 you listed, get yourself a good choke tube and shoot either Kent or Hevi Steel. The choke tube makes the need for "premium shells" null and void.

I'd get a box of each and pattern your shotgun if you can. That's the best way to make a good decision before buying a case... or 5

I've got an aftermarket one that I'm very happy with.

Fair enough.

I know Kent's shoot well out of mine. I suppose gettin a box of hevi steel, hevi metal and something like a box of Royals wouldn't be too expensive.

I like Dryloks the best, I'd probably go with Estates then Kent.

So I guess I'm telling you buy Kents.

Some aftermarket chokes tell you not to shoot premium loads with "flite wad control technology". It can damage gun and choke tube.

For instance, I have a patternmaster classic long range and can't shoot Black Cloud, Hevi Metal or Blindside.

I have a Redhead Blackout which is made by Carlson's. It specifically mentions on the tube itself that you can use "Steel, Lead, Copper or Hevi-Shot" so I should be OK that I know of. I'm not considering Black Cloud, Blind side looks to be out for now and if it can shoot Hevi-Shot, then Hevi-Metal shouldn't be a problem. I appreciate the heads-up though.

It is worth the extra $0.08 a shell to go ahead and buy the hevi metals. I have shot them for the past 4 years and can say without a doubt the hype about them is real.

I've had so many more one shot kills and can clean up other peoples birds that are shooting a lesser shell.

Q: I purchased a Patternmaster several years ago for goose and turkey hunting, I have recently purchased some Hevi-Shot and they recommend the choke diameter be .0675 +. 005 can you tell me what size Patternmasters ID is and if you have heard how the Hevi-Shot performs with your Chokes? A: Patternmaster Classic and Code Black tubes are not a constriction tube so the ammunition recommendations do not apply. Patternmaster chokes have been tested and works extremely well with Hevi-Shot.

This is directly from the Patternmaster FAQ page. Looks like you are good to shoot hevi-shot

I've honestly had extremely good succes with the rio bluesteels. I normaly shoot the hevi metal for big duck season and buy a case of whatever for teal. I bought a case of the bluesteel #3s and having not made enough hunts during teal season i had a few left over and used them for big duck. During both teal and big duck so far I have been smoking the birds. With some impressively far shot. I might be a convert

Last season I bought 2 cases worth of all of the different stuff out there. I hated the blindside and loved hypersonics and hevi-metals.

Only Kent I shot was the teal steel

Maybe it's just black cloud and blind side.

Good to know

The only reason patternmaster doesn't suggest shooting shells with flight control wads is because the choke bites the wad on the way out and separates it from the shot. You're paying extra for a fancy wad that your choke tube is going to keep from doing its job.
