I'll be buying a case of 3" #2 here shortly and have narrowed it down to Hevi-Metal ($170/case after rebate), Hevi-Steel ($130/case) and Kent Fasteel ($150/case) aaaand Winchester Blind Side ($150/case after rebate).

I've shot the Kent Fasteel in the past and was happy, but have been hearing great things about Hevi-Metal and Hevi-Steel. Does the OB have experience with these shells? And if I went with the Hevi-Metal, am I supposed to go down a size or two? WWTOBD?

ETA: Winchester Blind Side is now in the running...

I've shot about a case of HeavySteel through my Benelli and it's meh. I've had a few problems and they had a big recall on them last year. Buddy in KS also said some customers were having problems. Ive shot Heavi-Metal in the past but I'm too cheap to spend that kind of money on shells when the Kents are a good bargain. That's not a bad price on the Heavy-Metals though.

I havent duck hunted in forever so I am just telling you what I have heard from friends of mine who duck hunt a ton. I hear that Kent makes great stuff and their Tungsten Matrix shell is awesome.

Nope, but I added them to the list. Thanks. They're $150/case after the $50 mail in rebate.

In my experience w/ a beretta

Hevimetal>kent fast steel > blindside
W/ a mod choke. It works really well on geese and late season birds. Early in the year and over decoys they all do the job.
Hevimetal means feet up kicking ... although my dog does like a good goose chase and tackle

Havent tried hevisteel

I've shot Hevi metal, Hevi Steel, and Blind Side out of my guns (Beretta and Benellis) and I would rank in the following order: Hevi Metal - Hevi Steel - Blind Side. I have killed some mallards at 50 yards stone dead with Hevi-Metal and am about to hit Rogers up for another case or two soon. I have never shot the Kents to compare.

Ive had problems with kent shells for the past two seasons. The first shell will fire, but wont eject. We've had it happen with three different guns. I will never shoot Kent again. My buddies shoot Hevi steel or Hevi Metal and love those, but im fine with going to academy and picking up a couple boxes of Winchester super X for $11 dollars each. I have never had a problem with them.

I generally shoot the cheapest shells I can find, but I did shoot a case of Heavy Metal last year and they were great. It doesn't matter what you shoot when the ducks are where they're supposed to be, but for those times when you have to call the shot earlier than you want or for when ducks are on the way I had less cripples than with regular steel loads.

Agreed. 20-30 yard shots over the decoys, you can shoot anything. This past hunt I killed almost all of my birds over the decoys and it was clean kills shooting Xpert 1 1/8oz.

This is what I'm dealing with. The hole I primarily hunt was a lot more open water and shorter vegetation last year so even on long shots and cripples, we recovered almost everything. This year, the cattails are taller, more numerous, and thicker which has lead to many more lost birds than last year, primarily on passing shots or decoy shy birds - especially if they hit the water alive. Since I need more shells anyway, I figured I might as well invest in shells that will reduce my cripples and lead to more clean kills.

Quick sorta hijack. I need to order another case of Hevi metal (which BTW I cannot say enough about. Fewer cripples, and rolling up birds that even surprise me).

I have never done the rebate thing and am skeptical. So, if I understand it, you pay full price, then they send you $50 back? Whats in that for them? And do you always get the rebate? I don't really understand the point, but I know they do it for ammo a lot.

Fast Steel is the best for the money. If I'm paying for a premium shell, I'll get Hevi-Metal. Blindside is frickin trash and I didn't buy it even with my employee discount.
