re: Los Suenous, Coast Rica- Roosterfish
Posted by TheGreat318 on 6/11/18 at 7:40 pm to M4LSU
I've roosterfished a few times out of Los Suenos. Couple of things that are slightly counter intuitive about fishing for roosters:
1. They are generally less plentiful than sailfish.
2. For some boats, the price of going out for Roosters is the same as going out for Marlin and Sails.
3. Live Bait is absolutely key. If you don't have live bait (and the right kind of live bait), then you're in for a pretty long day.
4. Quepos has what I believe to be better roosterfishing, but the fleet of boats is nowhere near as nice. (I went out of Quepos for $500 less than out of Los Suenos. Hooked up to 8 and landed 1. The gear we were using wasn't very good, but the action was non-stop). I went out for a full day out of Los Suenos in March and caught all Jacks, no roosters.
If you're serious about catching a rooster, I recommend Capt. MJ Allgood or any of the Maverick Boats (Sea Fly is my Favorite). Be VERY clear with whomever you book with, though. If they can't find the right live bait, just go out for Sailfish. More action and about the same price.
Good luck.

re: what major fishing or hunting purchase would you make if you won the powerball tonight?

I'd buy a pair of those Banded Black Label Waders, one of those motorized jerk string deals, and a pack of gum. That should account for most of the 400M.

Does anyone know what a recreational fisherman/boat would do with something like that? Can a rec fisherman sell that fish at the dock?
Seems like that would present problems for a few anglers and whoever happens to be hanging around the dock. Obviously the meat is crazy good, and anyone would be lucky to get their hands on some, but that's prolly at least 700lbs of meat.

Thanks, brother. Appreciate the insights. Just trying to avoid that shell bill sticker shock.

Now you've piqued my interest. Most of these seem so established and repetitious from an operations standpoint, I'd be curious about how something could go wrong.

We're doing an afternoon of doves, an afternoon of perdiz, and four or five duck hunts. I went through Trek Safaris before, but Ramsey seems to have his act together.
Does Ramsey put on a pretty good trip? Also, trying to figure out what to budget for shells. At $14 per box, I was thinking 3 cases for the afternoon dove hunt (I don't really NEED to break any records, just want to enjoy myself and I figure 750 rounds should scratch the itch). I figure 3 or 4 boxes per hunt on ducks (25 ducks per hunt, per person as I understand it), and a box or two on perdiz. I know my shell tab last time was about $750, but that was just for ducks.
That sound about right?

Going in two weeks on a duck/dove/perdiz combo. Going with Ramsey Russell/Getducks outfitter. Will fill you in.

Did they also really hit a bird on the way out to the rig that day?

I want to find a way to harness that stuff for bio fuel. Harvest it, and move on to the next lake, return when it grows back, then harvest again. The good news is I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about in that arena, so science should beat me to the punch on an herbicide by at least 30 years.

With the right weapons, yes.
ETA: And it claims that they took turns doing it. My point is that seconds counted on this deal, especially considering they were down one chopper.

If we're being asked to believe that they spent time dumping 100 rounds into his dead body while at the compound instead of every available set of hands combing the entire place for intel/papers/hard drives/thumb drives, knowing that the Pakistani military would be on them in a matter of minutes, then this becomes difficult to imagine.

There isn't much in the way of restaurants or bars. I think the Oar House may be about it. That said, if you enjoy a quiet vacation, its awesome. Like mentioned above, the beaches are smaller, but pretty much the same. I really like it. Fort Morgan is a nice balance between Orange Beach and Dauphin Island.
(also, if you're a history nerd, read up on Dauphin Island. It was the original site of Mobile, AL and was originally known as Massacre Island...but not anymore...marketing I guess.)

I had the opportunity to hunt last season on the San Joaquin River at Jefferson Island. You could see some of the same mountains you can see behind San Francisco. Having hunted all over the south, I can say that it was some of the best I have ever done. Pintails, Mallards, Teal, Woodies, and TONS of Specklebellies. It was just West of Stockton. There were public WMAs around the island. Its definitely worth checking out. Its a whole lot like South LA Marshes, only with Mountains in the background.

I literally didn't change the batteries all year in my flock flickers. I used 2 or 3 at a time. Big fan. Fit in my blind bag and are a fraction of the PITA of a giant mojo.

I hunted in California in late January this year and those dudes do not even load their guns without a mojo going. First morning they forgot the battery and they walked 10 minutes back to the truck, drove another 15, and came all the way back just to get it going.
To be fair, we didn't kill a single bird til it was going...and then we killed lots.

If you're not spending 2700 a year on mojos, I just think you're wasting your time.
In all seriousness, I like to move around my place a good bit, lots of potholes of varying sizes. I really hate having to deconstruct a jerk cord every time I move to a new spot (and have paid the tangle price for half assing it plenty of times) but its definitely in my blind bag every time I move.

re: Los Suenos, CR
Posted by TheGreat318 on 3/13/17 at 8:10 pm to jgthunt
I literally just got back from Los Suenos yesterday and have actually been there during Mardi Gras before. We were there during Mardi Gras two years ago and caught 88 sailfish in 3 days and plenty of Mahi. The fishing in February and March is some of the best of the year. This year has been the slowest sailfishing that they have had in anyone's recent memory during these months, but its an anomaly for sure. If you're considering fishing, look at the inshore stuff too. You can catch Roosterfish and a ton of cool bottom fish inshore for much cheaper. Good option if the offshore bite isn't hitting. We did one day of inshore and 3 days of offshore, and I really enjoyed the inshore stuff just as much.
That said, there are jungle tours, golf, zip lining, surfing lessons in Jaco, a decent casino at Croc's Resort, ATV trails/rentals, jetskis, parasailing, etc. Theres even White Water rafting nearby. Plenty of spa options at Los Suenos.
Los Suenos is legit.

Damn, dude, how did yall manage that? We have fished out of Los Suenos for three years now out of that marina and have never come in with fewer than 10 billfish in a day. Did the weather get yall? We've also never managed to find a yellowfin despite trying though.
ETA: Not a criticism of your efforts, just know that the sails are thick from January through at least May

You say that like its a bad thing. I always had a thing for the handful of sorority girls who would go against the grain a little bit. They tended to be a little more fun than the ones looking over their shoulder, worried about what people think about their behavior. Not smelly hippies with dreads, but the kind of chicks that were down for a Phish show kinda sorority girl.
