ahhh haa... that's humurous. i wouldn't be completely "BLAMING" the chartered guy but i wouldn't think tipping should be in order either. You want tip, well i wanted fish buddy.

FWIW I don't think the OP was bitching about the guide, just kicking rocks and saying it sucks when you do everything you can to catch fish, hire a pro to help, and it doesn't work out. Then at the end of the day you still have to cut the check. More a "misery loves company" post than downvoting the guide.

I feel the same way about offshore fishing. My brother has a boat and it's fun, but sometimes you go out for blue water, get your arse kicked, come back with emtpy fish boxes, and at the end of the day still have to pony up $300 and a lost weekend with nothing to show for it.

I don't think he was either. I was just asking who the guide was so if it was the guy I know I could give him grief.

Happened to me on a charter out of Kauai recently. I was understanding until I started watching the captain and noticed he wasn't looking for anything. Just going for a boat ride. Never called another boat, never picked up a pair of binoculars, nothing. Tip = zero in that case.

I still would never tell someone I went fishing and did not catch a fish.

that is one bitter-arse pill to swallow when it happens. last yr we went just me and him, blew $250 a piece doing an overnighter and i think we had one blackfin to show for it. it was a fricking disaster.

Back in the late 90's, I took a charter trip on Lake Ontario for Kings and Steelheads.

The Captain told us if we don't catch a fish, the trip is free.

We each caught about 5 apiece.

They tasted like chemicals. Yuuuukkkkkk

Had a tuna trip like that. We were at the first rig and weren't doing much. Start heading to another rig, and the Capt. gets on the radio with one of his other Capts., and we can hear the people on that boat whooping and hollering. We get there and are in the middle of a school of jumping 60 lb. Yellowfin covering a few acres. Had visions of catching so many that the boat would sink. Then we could not get a bite for shite. We ended up catching 2 - one of which we "snagged." Capt. says they were in a frenzy eating small glass minnows or something - not the large live baits we were fishing. I would have thought they would be prepared for that type of scenario with lures that would look similar to what they were feeding on (but I'm no tuna fisherman). Picked up our 5 obligatory Amberjack on the way in, so with those and the 2 Yellowfin the trip wasn't a loss by any means. Being my first tuna trip, it was worth every penny just to see those hundreds of Yellowfin launching out of the water everywhere you look. Would have been nice to catch a dozen though.

I've fished Tarpon a few times now and it's tough. Just because they are bunched up doesn't make it a sure thing. I've fished Boca Grande a few times and while some days you'll get 5 or more hookups there are many days when you get none. A typical day is actually 1 or possibly 2 fish. Bait selection is often critical. It's just the way tarpon fishing goes.

No doubt, your bait can't be beat up at all. Gotta be very fresh.

We were fishing live pinfish and swim baits.

I'm not gonna throw the guides under the bus, we went out of Hurricane Hole. There wasn't a fish being cleaned when we got in and they do a lot of reef fishing out of there. Just a couple of shitty days in a row.

I've deckhanded many a trip where we got skunked, shite happens, the cap always did what he could to find the fish, but sometimes the fish give you the big F.U. What really sucked was getting $20 tips for busting my arse all day and we actually caught fish.

Made the same trip out of Key West about 3 weeks ago. Even worse.....weather was beautiful, did not see or catch a single tarpon ( except for the one caught in front of us by the guy who cut off our drift) . Caught 2 grouper and one of those was eaten by a cuda. Very frustrating day. Tough to write that $450 check

I've found that most people will forgive the captain, but tend to hold on a little longer against whoever recommended the captain. Which is usually me.

What would you consider a good tip? I've done lots of charters and usually tip $100 for the capt and deckhand to split. Does it depend on the number of people on the boat? I've gone out with just me and my gf, she just rides and tip them the same amount as i would if there were 4 guys on the boat fishing.

It's called fishing, not catching...

When you go on a charter you expect to catch fish. You are not paying to fish. You are paying money to catch fish/trophy fish and when you don't it sucks big time. It sucks worst than when you strike out on your own.

Bad experience on a yellow fin tuna fishing trip. Paid a lot of money to ride around all day looking for bait. Zero tuna were caught.
