Should have thrown what they were eating (I'm assuming that's why the roll). The captain should know what they are eating and should have been prepared to use the same bait.

Was he ready and did he have the appropriate bait?

And surely you didn't pay for the days not fished, right?

Tarpon are the only fully marine species of fish able to breathe air. The rolling you see is them gulping air to fill their swim bladder. The activity has nothing to do with feeding.

They are a blast to catch but they get pressured big time in Florida. Trolling live baits or even weighted jigs can work. But freelining a live pass crab is the ticket. Dealing with sharks can be a problem too, especially in Boca Grande Pass where I'd say 1 out of every 3 gets hit by a big bull shark or hammerhead on the way to the boat. Some days 100% of the hookups are devoured by sharks before the fish is landed.

Been skunked by charter captains more times than I care to admit....

Cabo San Lucas charter and a West Palm Beach charter.... seemed like both of these dipshit captains were content on going for an expensive boat ride.

So damn frustrating...

If a guide spends his day doing everything he can spending his money paying his boat note, paying his insurance and paying for all the maintenance then yes pay him. He did his job and it is called fishing. If you don't expect to pay if you don't catch then don't go. Because after 16 years of guiding not one person ever paid me twice as much if they caught twice as many fish. We work hard day in and day out to make sure everyone has a trip to remember. We can't control if the fish are biting that day. I know it sucks because I'm twice as upset as any customer will ever be if I fill like we had a bad day.but I still did my job as good as any other charter boat would have and I'd like to thank better. We don't do this to get rich, we enjoy the company and sharing the outdoors with others. We spend hours and days preparing for the trips. Talking to other captains making a game plan for the next day. So yes it sucks you didn't catch any fish but if this captain is well known for catching fish don't bash him because the fish weren't biting when he put you in the middle of the school and for the guy that said he shouldn't have paid I would like to know WHY if he did his job by bringing you to the fish and worked all day why shouldn't he get paid. If you thank our job is so easy come try it you can start working Friday.

Why would you rather advertise . I brought you where we didn't see a fish. If you know the fish are there they just didn't bite one day, that doesn't mean they won't be hungry and bitting the next. A fishing charter is the opportunity to catch fish. They obviously had the opportunity if the fish were all around them. I'd much rather hear about seeing hundreds of fish rolling than nothing at all. I'm just trying to get people to understand that 90% of the charter captains do everything in there power to catch fish and they want to catch fish. They wouldn't be in business if they didn't. Also do your research. Call the marina ask the charter service about one of the other guides you may not always get an honest answer but if you asked me about another captain I would be honest. I'm not going to bash anyone over the internet. But know what to expect. I have guys that tell me they want to catch 20 different species. That's impossible even if I ran 100 mph and fished with 12 poles. I've caught my clients tons of fish but didn't catch one species and they bashed me on the internet . I just thank the guys that bash most of these charter boats have no idea the work load and pressure we are under every day. Just remember next time your are fortunate enough to go on a charter that it's the opportunity to catch fish and if you can't appreciate a day on the water away from work then don't go. Life is too short to worry about what you didn't catch, appreciate the fact you were able to go in the first place because a lot of people aren't that fortunate.

when i get skunked on a charter, i refuse to pay. gotten in quite a number of scrambles as a result, but i'm not paying money if we don't produce. i got on fishing trips to catch fish. that's my only reason. if i don't catch fish, you don't get paid.

just kidding

To answer your question about how much is a good tip
I'll break it down what a deck hand or captain expects.
10% of the trip total is expected if they did there job
15% if you thought he did an incredible job
20% if it was one of your best trips ever and the whole crew did more than you expected.
Very similar to what you would tip at a restaurant

The sad thing about a bad catch that most people don't feel the need to tip is that the deck hand works twice as hard and the captain when the fishing is slow. But when your fighting fish we can sit back and relax. Trust me I would rather be fighting fish. I use to charge for fish cleaning and over half of the people complained that they had to pay more for catching a lot of fish then those were the same people wanting to pay less when the catch was average. So my question for the guys that want to pay less are you going to pay more if you do catch or should everyone make their rates so high that no one can afford to fish so that if you don't catch everything you want you don't pay. Because if you want to pay more when you catch call me up I load the boat when I go out.

Meat Haul.

I talked to RD last night. Let's take the Hatteras out for the tarpon rodeo and win it, then go to the island and act like assholes.

[quote]What would you consider a good tip? I've done lots of charters and usually tip $100 for the capt and deckhand to split. Does it depend on the number of people on the boat? I've gone out with just me and my gf, she just rides and tip them the same amount as i would if there were 4 guys on the boat fishing.[/

You sound like a fair tipper. I meant busting my arse for 8 hours for a six-pack trip where they only threw me $20 after catching and cleaning a good bit of fish. Fishcommander's suggested tip percentages make sense.

FYI, fished Key West this past weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Got completely wore out catching fish.

Fought tarpon for hours until we needed a break and caught a few sharks and barracuda. Actually caught a nice keeper grouper while trying to catch a tarpon.
