Friend of mine got bit on the hand by a cottonmouth in high school. His arm was swelling up so bad they actually cut it open in a long line down his arm. They were afraid it was going to rip his skin open. He got a narly scar from it. But they just cut him open and left it open until the swelling went back down.

If it's swollen they got venom. If it didn't swell in the first 30 minutes you can skip the ER.

Hope they are insured. The antivenom is a racket.

No questions about how she got bit on the hand? Trying to pick it up? Or laying in wait and surprise bite?

Fascinating if you look at the list of deaths from venomous snakes in the US it seems more than half are from some sort of religious event.

that’s nuts

I’ve also read that more people die rushing to the hospital than from the actual bitte

Hope she has good insurance, heard a story the other day on the ME podcast where the anti-venom was about $110,000 for someone that was recently bit.

I've seen many snake bites over the years. Seems like 95% of copperhead bites go home after 2 hours observation, a tetanus shot and a vicodin. The few moccasin bites I remember were pretty nasty and got crofab and admitted, as well as timber rattler bites. Seen a guy die after the second timber rattler bite. He was in ICU 6 months earlier for same thing. Dumbass kept picking them up! The only coral snake bite I've ever seen looked fine, but went to ICU for observation. Seems most bites are either on the hand from gardening or picking them up, the rest are on foot from walking in flip flops. I NEVER walk thru my yard in the dark, in flip flops, without a light. I actually walked up on a juvenile copperhead earlier this year in my back yard. I was in flip flops, and without my phone light shining down, I would have stepped right on that mthrfrkr.

That's because we have Holiness Pentecostal churches aka "snake handling" churches scattered all over back home. Growing up there, I hunted with a buddy of mine who's daddy was and still is a snake handling preacher in Harlan County. We would go out and hunt for timber rattlers and copperheads to sell to the church members. A big yella rattler would get you a $150.

Even amongst us hillbillies, snake handlers stand out.

Thanks for that post. Interesting. So you think ordinary sneakers actually provide some protection, based on the number of foot bites you’ve seen? Not many ankle or shin, calf bites?

Not necessarily, I just think it's the fact that most bites occur around the house / garden sceneries. I always wear snake boots when I go to South Texas hunting. My cousin wears his fkn crocs.. to me, that is just asking to ruin a hunting trip. I believe in risk reduction. While I'm not gonna wear snake boots in my yard, I do have 3 acres backed up to woods and marsh, and I don't venture past the lawnmowed area in flip flops ever.

Update:
Released this morning from the hospital. Swelling has subsided. She's going to be fine. Has good insurance, otherwise she'd have a six figure hospital bill.

She was gardening and he was in a flower pot. I appreciate everyone on here.

Just get him to the hospital and it will be fine
