What is the best fishing line on the market nowadays? I'm kind of old school and still use Berkley big game.... is it better to switch to braid? If so how easy is it to change baits with braid? I mostly freshwater fish but do enjoy a saltwater trip a few times a year....

You’ll get a ton of opinions. Mine is that there is no one-size-fits-all fishing line. It all depends on the application.

Mono for top water, Fluorocarbon everything else unless i need braid for frog, heavy flipping in muddy water or ripping ratltraps in heavy grass.

I do tons of wade fishing... I keep Trilene big game 12lb green on my reels. Then again, I’m only hauling in trout and reds. As said before, it all depends on what your fishing for.

ETA: speaking of which, it’s time to re-spool for the season. Thanks for the reminder.

I've been a simple 12lb mono guy for bass fishing, and the annual inshore trip. I can't remember losing a fish to a broken line. Keep the drag set correctly, and change the line every year (maybe more), cut off any of the fray from a fish/cover.

I have fished light braid on an ultralight spinner. Seemed to keep the twists down over 6lb mono. Most of the guys I fish with are fluorocarbon and braid. Might spool up my newest baitcaster with the fluoro to give it a try.

Recently switched to Suffix Advance Mono over Berkley and I've been happy.

I have braid on everything I own now. I dont worry about breaking anything off. Slickback brought a 6 foot blacktip to the side of the boat a couple of years ago with my redfish pole and 30 pound power pro. It would have taken all day to do that with mono or flouro if we would have gotten it at all.

No worse than with anything else.

If I'm fishing the bottom near a bridge where a fish might bring me into a piling, I'm using flouro. It sinks and is more abrasion resistant.

Top water I use mono. It floats. Bass fishing, depending on what the area is like you can make an argument for a few different lines and none are going to be a deal breaker.

Heavy cover where a big fish might break me off as in sighting for reds I use braid.

Fishing line tech comes down to specific application if you're choosing one over another

30lb power pro on everything. Varying leader lengths/sizes depending on the target.

braid: bottom bouncing jigs/creature baits/punching
mono: topwater/jerkbait/crankbait
flouro; chatterbait/spinnerbait/swim bait

Mostly have Ande Backcountry mono 12lb on my reels

I do use braid on two of my spinning reels because you can slap it in and don't have to worry about taking the line off when you get too much memory build. Power Pro super slickn8 will stay good for years

I used to like big game until I tried momoi hi-catch. That's all I use for mono any more and it's for long top shots (50+ ft) and sabiki reels.
Everything else is superslick powerpro or suffix 8-32. Then a leader when appropriate for the situation.
Tie a 5 or 6 turn uni knot for most connections. Use a leader with a snap for jerkbaits.

Not trying to be a jerk but you may as well ask someone what the best color is. Spool one with braid and see if you like it; that's the only way you'll know. And get one of the high-count (smooth) braids, because the basic ones all sound like crap if you're used to mono. They're just loud going through the guides. I prefer Daiwa J8 but there are plenty of other good choices.

For saltwater fishing I could fish any line, but for bass I really, really prefer braid for the sensitivity because I'm fishing soft plastics 99% of the time. With braid and a good rod you can feel every little tug and bump.

I only bass fish.

PowerPro Superslick V2 is my go to ranging from 10-30lbs. Braid provides sensitivity that is unmatched.

I tie a fluorocarbon leader to almost every setup. Typically use Seagar Invizex but recently got Daiwa Samurai which has been very nice. I use Sunline Sniper in 7lb test for my spinning finesse applications.

Almost strictly bass fish:

Almost all baitcast reels spooled with 40lb braid, either Suffix 832 or PowerPro SuperSlick V2.

On my handful of dedicated crankbait rods, I have either mono for square bills and shallow divers or fluorocarbon for deep divers. I rarely throw deep divers though.

For spinning reels, I use either 8lb Berkley Nanofil in green or 8lb Ardent Gliss.

For spinning and all baitcast braid applications, I tie on a fluoro leader. The one exception here is topwater, in which case I use a mono leader.

The water where I fish is a lot clearer than the water I grew up fishing in Louisiana and I mostly fish from a kayak so keep that in mind when I say what I use. In a kayak, space is limited so each rod has to be able to fish different presentations. Because of that, I just put Trilene Big Game either 8lb or 10lb test on all my reels. I use a lot of KVD line conditioner when I spool it and before each use and I respool pretty often. The line is cheap but dependable for the bass fishing I do.

When I have the luxury of being able to bring a lot of rods, I like the Seaguar InvizX for Fluorocarbon and PowerPro for braid.

Everybody else is making this too complicated (for freshwater fishing in south La.).

Braid on everything. Brand is a personal preference as long as you get high quality line - I started with Spider Wire when it first hit the market and haven't found anything that's better. 40 pounds is a good all-around strength.

Making a long cast with any bait (especially a plopper or buzz bait) and you get a great hook set. Fishing a worm or jig and you get great sensitivity along with a great hook set.

Haven't found a reason to use a leader.

BBG is best line for the money now and forever. I use 20# braid exclusively on spinning tackle. And 50# braid on certain applications on baitcasting. Suffix Superline 832 is my braid of choice.

You haven’t found a reason for a leader? Unless you only fish dirty water ...

I hate braid. Fluorocarbon is ok. I have had issues with braid. I have had one issue with Fluoro and have never had any issues with mono.

My brother loves braid despite the issues I see him fighting periodically.

Lots of opinions, pick one!
