Why are the elk hunting tags and licenses so expensive? Is it because of rednecks and coonasses that would go over there and kill them all??? i wanted to hear it from the OB as to why it is so expensive

Because they get more applicants than they have tags available at those prices.
Pro tip: go camping without a tag and just see if you can put eyes on an elk before you spend the money on a tag. I would have saved myself a good chunk of money not buying a tag until I figured out how to camp, how to stay alive, and how to find an elk.

No doubt.
Your average coonass has no idea how to keep his water and toothpaste from freezing overnight, how to keep his tent from disappearing in the snow, or how to put snow chains on a truck.
Killing an elk is the only thing you need a tag for. Learn how to do the other stuff first, because you aren't going to kill any elk spending all day just trying to not die.

There is a high demand for all elk tags and there are far less elk than whitetails. Unfortunately though, all non resident tags are now expensive baw.
In fact, a non resident oklahoma DEER license kit would set you back $710 this year, $500 for the non resident mississippi pine goat archery season, and about $600 for Kansas whitetails add another $150 if you are fortunate enough to draw a mule deer permit.
Actually, it makes $773 for a high demand new mexico elk tag seem like a bargain. I think a montana general elk tag is the highest at $1048. Unfortunately, I think they will all be north of $1000 in the near future.

I buy points in basically every state and im happy to pay the license fees for the adventure when i draw something. With the current trends, I dont know if cost escalation or my aging body will stop me first.

I overheard a conversation between a doctor in Texas and a New Mexico hunting guide last year. A five day guided hunt including a tag only but no food and lodging was $12,500. Food and lodging would bring price to $14,000. Doctor bought the $14,000 five day hunt with no guaranteed kill. If people pay that kind of money to hunt then that’s what it will cost to hunt. It’s why I mostly fish now.

That's actually not a bad idea at all.
Do your research, pick an area that you likley can get a tag in most years, and just go out for 4-5 days and go camping/hunting without your bow/gun. Get a small game tag and bring a .22 and kill some grouse. Learn how to call and get some live practice that is stress free.
You're first year out there you'll pack too much shite anyway and be too distracted with everything else to even be a good hunter. Might as well just go out there and have fun and see if it's somethign you want to take more seriously.

That’s not how much it costs to go elk hunting in New Mexico.
If we compare it to fishing, there are people that also spend thousands of dollars to fish each year, but you don’t need to spend that much to go fishing.
That’s probably not the greatest comparison, but I guess what I’m trying to say is what a rich doctor spends to do something doesn’t mean that’s what it costs for everyone.

Brings in extra revenue for G& F departments. Most departments generate their own revenue, not much comes from the state legislatures. So they set aside a certain percentage of tags for non- residents.
In Wy a resident tag is $57. Nonresident $692. But this year there is a new non-resident special permit for $1,950. Not sure the difference in permits.

I agree with you in that you don't need to spend that much to go hunting but if you want to go hunting you will need to spend more than you want to.

Supply and demand.
I’ve hunted Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Texas and Arizona. I sure do love the taste of elk.
IMO……. You can’t eat horns. Get some cow tags. Enjoy the meat.

Non residents fund every game and fish department.

The price of Colorado tags had me researching what the fine was for getting caught without a tag…. In all the years that I’ve been, I’ve never seen a warden.

I know lots of locals who don’t kill very often. Don’t flatter yourself.
