Haven’t seen this many birds down here in a long long long time. Went take a ride past the grain elevator in Westwego and the whole river is black with ducks. It’s amazing what happens when we get a strong Northern front.

It’s cold up here and getting colder.

Around 17 here right now. They’re calling for 4-14” of snow over the next few days.

The flooded ditch by my moms house must have had 100 or more Mexican ducks in it. I told my cousin not only are we being invaded from the southern border now we’re being over run by Mexican duck.

Wouldn't the Mexican ducks also come from the southern border?

Back in the mid 80's (I think/long time ago) we went on a duck hunt up the Beouf River, it had been crazy cold for a week or so and 8 degrees that morning.

To unload your boat and get out you had to back your truck down in the water and get a running start because the ramp was solid ice.

We ended up in grassy bayou which had moving water, all the woods was frozen

I've never seen so many Mallards in my life, we came around a curve before daylight and jumped 4-500 so we sat up there and limited out in 30 minutes once light broke.

At some point you would think LDWF might consider moving the season back

Several years back I was working in Tensas Parishes the Wednesday after duck season had ended. The rivers, ponds, lakes, and fields were thick with birds. I mentioned this to one of the locals I met who told me "there wasn't a duck in the parish until two days ago."

LDWF has their hands tied. The Feb. 1 end of duck season is mandated by the federal government.

Our duck lease had a pipeline crossing on it. The marsh sides of the crossing had two deep pits surrounded by trees and dirt mounds.

In 1984/or 1989 all the ponds froze except for that spot. The mallards and pintails stacked up there.
I sat on the hill in the willows and shot mallards and pintails till I ran out of shotgun bullets.( That’s what my sister called them. ) It was beautiful.

It was crazy.

Not very many ducks at all here in the mountains, so I never did get into duck hunting and don't know much about it. When ducks head down to yall's area during or before a strong northern cold front, do they stick around after the front passes or do they head back up north?

They used stick around in greater numbers yrs back than they do now. We had lots of water around Shreveport (where i frequent) in 2016 and had blue wing teal around into May that year.
