As did I. When it got cold we would hit Grassy and get into them. Had some memories made in that area. Had a guy driving my boat almost cost us our lives after letting a big wave come over the gunwale in that big bean field. I’ve never forgotten how close of a call that was. It was very cold. I believe a couple of fellow hunters froze to death that same night while holed up in a blind angler having a boat mishap. We were young and lucky that day

We had lots of water around Shreveport (where i frequent) in 2016 and had blue wing teal around into May that year.

That’s pretty normal for bw teal. First to migrate down and last to come back through

They used to hang around til October at the latest and bug out to Mexico/Central America but now they stick around all season which is the strange thing

Some breed here in Louisiana as well

It seems like Migration has gotten later and later each year. It will be interesting to see when they return to the breeding grounds compared to years prior.

This cold blast caused food to become scarce up north and ducks won’t migrate south unless they have trouble finding food.

In 1984/or 1989 all the ponds froze except for that spot.

Fairly sure that happened in 1984. I had a Yamaha 225 3 wheeler and we rode on top of sloughs that was 2-3 ft deep. You could go anywhere you wanted in Tensas in tennis shoes without getting muddy, everything was frozen solid.

Now after it thawed out it was one hell of a mess.I seem to remember it getting down to 5 degrees and it was in the teens for a few days prior to that.

1983 had brutal cold as did 1989 during duck season.

83 was the one that killed several hunters.

At some point you would think LDWF might consider moving the season back

They don't care if you don't kill ducks. As long as you're buying a license and not doing illegal shite.

They do a piss poor job of managing grounds for waterfowl, in comparison to other states.

That being said. They have 0 say over pushing duck season dates

ETA they pick their illegal things to focus on. If you need to get their attention. Call and tell them someone shot a black bear. They’ll show up in a matter of minutes.

Me and a bud crossed little river bridge sideways heading to his camp at Nebo during that one. Spent the next couple days working on their lake truck, ice on catahoula was easily a foot thick.

The flooded ditch by my moms house must have had 100 or more Mexican ducks in it. I told my cousin not only are we being invaded from the southern border now we’re being over run by Mexican duck.

These? This is a Mexican Duck, and is similar to a Mottled Duck:

Whistling duck so

I think the “Mexican Ducks” they are talking about are what the locals here in Cut Off call whistling tree ducks or Mexican tree ducks.

No a Mexican Duck is very much like a Mottled Duck. The don't whistle and don't have long legs.

I'm amazed at how common (and relatively tame) those things are these days. It's not unusual to see those birds grazing in peoples' yards. I never saw one until a few years ago; now they're everywhere. We used to encounter a few Fulvous Whistling Ducks in the spring in Cameron Parish, but that was about it.

Only 3rd time I’ve seen ducks covering our ponds was in extreme cold. We have plenty of woodies but only green heads when temps are this cold.

You have no clue what you are talking about. What people in Louisiana and Mississippi refer to as Mexican duck/Mexican tree ducks are black bellied whistling ducks.

Yep, they are really common down here and there has been a big increase in population, at least around me. I have some pics from last spring where there are a hundred or so gathered around a small pond in the pasture next to my place. The guy that owns the pond has a couple of tame ducks and he has a couple of deer feeders that go off to feed the tame ducks. THose whistling ducks kinda take over the pond in spring.

Well, my single reed only quacks in English. Won't be any good if one of them flies over my spread.

The S. Louisiana colloquial term is "Mexican Squealers" for Black Bellied Whistling Ducks and Fulvous Tree Ducks. Nobody that I have heard calls Mottled Ducks, or their cross border cousins, Mexican Ducks. They do call Mottle Ducks Summer Mallards or Summer French, or hen mallard when they have no idea what they shot.
