Have a 7 year old terrier mix. Small dog 18 lbs. Used to feed her Purina. She got to where she limped on walks and was missing jumping up on the bed. We decided to upgrade her food and see if it made a difference. Switched to Blue Buffalo wild cuts and she made night and day improvements. No limps, missed jumps, etc... I believe it was the improved food quality. Well, we added another border terrier mix puppy (small 23 lbs) and she has a borderline satanic appetite. We went from 60 every 3 months to 60 a month on dog food. Wife wanted to scale back. She bought Science Diet. It's 12 less a bag and you get 14 more lbs so it's considerably cheaper.

My thing is, if that Blue Buffalo without all that grain made the older pooch that much better, I'm fine spending a little more. What's the OB's experience with Science Diet? Is it still considered top shelf dog food?

I switched to Victor after loose stools on Pro Plan and a talk with my vet. I have been very happy with the change. IT gets very high independant reviews.

Top shelf dog food is usually bought at feed stores. Science diet is not top shelf. Blue buffalo isn't either

Blue Buffalo got busted for claiming their food was something it's not. I would look at changing just because they are not trustworthy.

From what I've read/been told, it's probably not a substantial improvement over Purina. I doubt it is problematic or anything, I just don't think it's considered a premium dog food.

We did Blue Buffalo for a while before switching to Taste of the Wild. Taste of the Wild is cheaper, I think we usually pay 40-45 for the 30 pound bag on Amazon. It gets pretty strong reviews. Every now and then we do a bag of Merrick because our dog loves it, but it's pricier, like 55 for 25 pounds, I think.

What we feed our black lab as well. The breeder fed it to all of his dogs, so we did as well.

I guess by "top shelf" I meant the pricey stuff at PetCo. When we switched from Purina I read a ton of online reviews (I figured the majority of these were written by the food companies to begin with). Blue Buffalo didn't have any cheap grains so I went with that. I'm no dog food guru though. I'm sure there is better out there. What are some of the feed store brands I should look for? Comparable cost?

It never was top shelf, and wouldn't have been considered so, if it hadn't been pushed by vet offices who were getting perks to do so.

Definitely better foods out there to spend your money on.

The absolute best dog foods I've bought my Vizsla, who's very damn sensitive, have been Innova EVO and Wellness CORE. They are very energy dense dog foods though, and at least the former will take some transition time.

My vet feeds his two cloned dogs that cost him $100G's Science Diet and that's what we feed our 16 year old dog.

In my case, yes.

I would do this if I could. When my older dog dies, the younger one is probably going to get Ole Roy

EVO and Orijen work best for my dog. Your dog will get fat if you don't give them the correct amount or they are lazy. I have tried all of those except Instinct

Yes, you are horrible. If you can't afford to feed your dog steaks at least 3 or 4 times a week, you don't deserve to own them.

I'm calling Doggie Protective Services on you to have them removed from your abusive home.

If you free-feed from a puppy, this will not happen. All of my dogs have been free-fed. if you saw my terier, you would think she was starving. I have even converted a stray who wanted to eat the whole bag at first.

A quick search on dog food rating sites will show you that this food isn't all its cracked up to be. There are FAR better foods out there that are easily available.
