Not trying to jack the thread, but has anyone tried the bolt action upper for the AR guns? I don’t want to teach my kids (oldest is 6yo) on a semi-auto, I guess I can always just put in a round at a time if I don’t go the bolt route. I’ve already got a .300blk AR and bear creek sells the bolt upper for about $200, making it a cheap option.
Look into straight pull charging handles.
A straight-pull charging handle for an AR-15 replaces the standard T-handle or side-latched design with a specialized or latchless mechanism tailored for manual, single-shot, or bolt-action style operation

With you saying that I’ll probably stick to PSA. As mentioned by several with adding a suppressor…is 18 inch ok? I don’t see a 16 inch. Would be my first go at suppressors so I’ll have to do more research

Diligent defense has their enticer around $600. They are excellent but hard to find in stock.

18 is fine. Take the muzzle gizmo off and put a thread protector or suppressor. Teach the kids to shoot with hearing protection 100% of the time. 16 and 18 inch ARs are LOUD. PSA uppers are fine. Dont expect a tack driver, but you don't need one to shoot deer out to 300 yards.
You can get an AB A10 7.62 for about $450 and you'll have an extremely excellent suppressor. You might need to change buffers to get the ejection port quieted down, or get an upper with an adjustable gas block.
If you want to spend $1000 plus the world is uour oyster but thats hardly necessary.

Just chiming in to say I went that route a number of years ago and went with the 6.5 Grendel and love it.
I’m the only one who killed a deer with it last year.

AR is a terrible choice for a first rifle
Its got a lot going for it. They are small and light and can be shortened up a lot. Also super easy to convert into a .22 for practice. I love an AR as a kids/ woman's rifle. I love em for myself to use. They are so small and light.

Lots of good info here. For hunting purposes, no matter what you go with, get a better trigger.

That's the best thing about them. You don't have to waste money on a youth model. Adjustable stock makes it a family gun. Invest in a can and you're set for a while.

Bear creek arsenal has some but I don’t know anything about them
Stay away from Bear Creek. QA/QC is horrendous among many other issues.
I used barrels from the company that started the Grendel - Alexander Arms.
Do not go below 18" although a 20" is better for that round. Overall 6.5 Grendel is probably the best overall performing round for the small AR, but you need a longer-ish barrel to really get the benefits.
These days, the 6ARC is awesome and can use a shorter barrel. If given the choice between the two, I would choose the ARC today. Why? The Grendel, after several tries, never got adopted by the military. The ARC did. That means what it always means, ammo will be more available.
A rifle in 6mm ARC, with a 16" barrel would be perfect as a youth rifle.

I think we over think this. I've considered this in the past also. But why? I'm not convinced a single shot shotgun or pump is better than a semi auto either. I think we try to rationalize "they need to learn the hard way", which really makes no sense anymore.
I think it makes more sense to concentrate on a good shot which means a comfortable fitting gun and low recoil. If you only put one round in the chamber at a time, I don't think that's the worst idea.

I bought Aero lower locally. I got the rest from Grendel Hunter.com

Buy and upper with an adjustable gas block. Then tune the gas block down to where the gun won’t cycle. It essentially turns it into a bolt gun. When you’re ready, you just tune the gas block back up and it becomes a semi auto again

I just have a kids clip. Its a 10 round P mag, and it only has 1 round in it.
Kid gets to look cool kitted out, world is safe from said kid flinging lead all over the world.

Yep. I’ve only got one upper - 16” 6.5 Grendel and it does exactly what I want it to. I was thoroughly impressed with the accuracy. I don’t care much for AR’s, so I wanted something cheap for a kid to use.
To the OP: If I had to do it all over again, I would buy this instead (I still might buy one): https://bpioutdoors.com/scout-xp-sb/
ETA: just bought one in 350 legend

Just for arguments sake, we have a ruger american ranch bolt gun in 6.5 grendel that is amazing and would fit them. Perfect fun with a suppressor.

If you're in La. I'm pretty sure hunting with anything more than a 5 round mag is a no-no.
Not trying to go all green jeans, just don't wanna see anyone get jammed up.

That'd be good to know. I didnt see that in the pamphlet but I speed read it.
Guess I could just leave the mag at home if so.
